It was March the 23rd, it's been a month since the big fight. A week after, the divorce was finalized, a restraining order was in the works against Renae but after hearing non-illegal details about the fight, Carmen tossed out the plea. A week later, she sent a cryptic message to Zaire, and he had no idea what she meant until she fell off the face of the earth. Kairo and Zaire squashed the tension that was forming between them, and Lucky found himself enjoying Kairo's company even though he tried hard not to.
He never had a brother and never thought about wanting one. He had a little sister and felt as if she was enough, though he knew their traumas were the cause of her always wanting to check on him. But Lucky hated people. Hate was a strong word. A powerful one at that, and he hated people. So he always tried to keep away from humans unless it had to deal with his missions. If it didn't involve violence, humans had nothing to say or offer him.
But that damn Kairo, he wiggled on into what humanity Lucky was still holding onto and was beginning to secure himself a place. A little brother position. It felt weird to Lucky. Tolerating someone other than Ava or Renae made him feel as if he had been cloned. But Kairo wasn't worrisome or annoying. The more Lucky hung out with him, he realized that Kairo genuinely just wanted to have a little-brother-big-brother connection with someone.
After all, out of all the kids Renae birthed, he was the only boy. Though he had male figures in his life, it wasn't the same. His relationship with Zaire wasn't what he wanted from someone like The Goonies or Lucky, because Zaire was younger. Being that Zaire was younger, Kairo felt as if he took on the place of being the role model or second parent. Hell, if he were being honest, he wanted an older brother figure so that he could feel how Zaire feels when with him. Or how Dajon feels whenever he hung out with King or Kwan.
Since The Goonies were always traveling, Lucky was best shot and he took it. He may have been a bit eager or annoying, but if he were being honest, he wanted a friend. Someone other than his father or uncle that he could look up to or take advice from. Lucky was the closet thing to that and he took it. And oddly, Lucky was growing used to it though he often cracked on Kairo as if he were getting on his nerves.
If Lucky were being honest, he knew it wouldn't hurt to in a sense, mentor someone or just hang out. That's all Kairo wanted. Someone to hang out with. But the advice would also be greatly appreciated.
Nobody spoke much about Yanna or what they thought she might try. It took Renae four days to climb out of the dark mental space she allowed Yanna to put her in, but she used that time to forgive herself and remind herself that it was ok for her to feel angry and hurt. Toward the last two days in February, the twins spent two weeks at their parents house with the babies. That resulted in Ava staying home a lot more, which also resulted in Lucky coming over more. Baby Neela wore him down after the second day, and it got to the point where she was stuck to his hip. The family noticed a softer side of him whenever he played or talked to her, but Ava wasn't shocked at all, she was just glad that everyone else got to see the side of him that she loved so much.
Zaire and the family celebrated his eighteenth birthday in Jamaica per his request. A week after their return, Lucky had five dates set up for him and Ava. The first was a date at the lake, just as an ODE to when they first hung out outside of their grocery store date-not-so-date. The second date was in Williamsburg at a supposed-to-be-haunted luxury hotel. Ava thought he was crazy as hell to do that but it was amusing to Lucky. Nothing happened at the hotel, other than the winds blowing eerily. Their third and fourth date was at the Great Wolf Lodge, just for the hell of it. And the fifth was a picnic on the beach.
Two weeks later, after Ava had an emotional breakdown after losing one of her patients she formed a close bond with, Lucky discovered movie night at Moutain Trashmore and invited Kairo and Kelly to tag along. The four sat through four movies until the host of the night had to tell everyone that it was time to close up shop. From there, Kairo and Kelly left by midnight, but Lucky took Ava to a reggae club across town just so she could let loose and forget about anything that might have been bothering her still.
