Mr Watson had read too many fanfictions for his own sanity. Virgil Grimm was a sophomore and had Mr Watson as his English teacher. He was very eccentric and slightly chaotic but that was the positives of his class – and he was fully supportive of Virgil's trans identity. Not many people were in this small town.
Anyway, the reason why Mr Watson needed to stay away from fanfictions was because he seemed to enjoy staging meet-cutes. He staged a normal group project for an English class of perspectives shown in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice to create a poster but he had placed Virgil, a boy with hardly any friends, with the popular Roman Krol. The Roman that came from a rich family and didn't have to worry about anything in the world, he was an athletic soccer player that was already on track for college scholarships when he needed to be concerned with that. In high school Roman was just the main protagonist for a Disney movie with all the love interests and friends he needed.
"Are you going to help me then?" Virgil stabbed towards Roman's direction, where Roman was snooping around his stuff as if he owned the small room. It was in fact Virgil's room – not decorated exactly as he'd like as he didn't have the money to invest into interior design. The only personalisation in the interior of Virgil's room was a feature wall of a lilac cloud that he started painting years ago and had only just finished. Roman was watching it intently.
"This is pretty..." The compliment was laced with the dead name Virgil had to go by in school as the principal had refused to change it. Virgil didn't take the compliment and instead mumbled, finishing some shading on Mr Darcy's face as it seemed Roman had already deemed the project finished.
Roman didn't seem to mind the silence and continued to look around, asking questions to a girl Virgil knew but wished he didn't. Virgil realised his identity in middle school and strived to be completely himself in freshman year. Unfortunately, almost every teacher apart from Mr Watson was transphobic so Virgil had to stay as his dead name and the fact that he was transgender stayed as a hushed secret between him and supportive teachers or acquaintances. No-one else seemed to care about getting to know Virgil so he couldn't really come out to anyone else. Roman seemed to be adventuring the closet bedroom like it was a crime scene though.
"What's a Virgil?"
That question caught Virgil off guard, before he remembered what his latest artistic project was – a wooden sculpture with his name on. It was just waiting to dry when Virgil had to leave for school the previous morning and he had forgotten about it until this current moment. "It's my name..." Virgil whispered, still trying to contain his amazement that Roman had yet to throw an insult about it. Instead Roman just nodded and picked the art piece up to examine it closer. "Can you not touch it? I've been working hard on it."
"You're like... actually talented." Roman interrupted the other member of his group project again to sit down on a nearby desk chair and trace his finger over the sharp letters (which meant it would have to be painted yet again). "You should go to art school."
"My mom won't allow that. She already hates having a trans kid." Virgil had to treat his situation with a half-laugh while Roman looked at him with a sympathetic glance. It made him feel too vulnerable for his liking when people were actually sympathetic to the transphobia he faced everyday – he got that look less often than people would expect. "Didn't I tell you to get your hands off that Meta Knight? Get your ass over here and do some work."
Roman nodded, placed the wooden figure on the desk again and sat on the floor. Instead of grabbing a pencil and writing though he stayed still, watching Virgil. Virgil raised an eyebrow at the jock to get him to speak. "Can I call you Virgil?"
It was impossible for Virgil to hide his smile – he would take anyone wanting to use his real name as a win as such a phenomenon hadn't happened before. "Of course." He managed to laugh out, a blush reaching his face that he hid with his hoodie sleeves. Virgil really needed to calm his euphoria down to act like a normal human. "Just... Grab a pencil or something. I need Bingley quotes."
Roman grabbed a pencil but didn't do anything with it. The pencil just tapped against his knee and watched Virgil again. It wasn't normal for Roman's brain to be working this much, Virgil supposed. But he seemed to have more thoughts going across his mind that usual as he began sitting in a ball, biting his thumbnail. And Virgil, as the ever-nervous high school student, knew what that positioning meant. "You have... something to say?"
Roman's mouth formed to the start of the 'y' in yes, he looked down at his feet, but then his phone rang. He hesitated for another moment as he dragged the iPhone out of his varsity jacket pocket. When he saw the person calling him he sighed. "It's my mom, sorry." And with that he left out of the bedroom and into the small hallway where he wouldn't be disturbed as Virgil's mom was at work. Virgil couldn't hear exactly what was being said apart from soft calm mumbles and sighs, and before he knew it Roman was back in the room.
"I have a favour to ask." Roman started, stuffing his hands in his jean pockets and showing a smirk as Virgil raised his head. "I have to stay over as my parents are staying extra hours. I have some spare clothes in my bag from practice but my mom said if I'm at a girl's house I need to be in a separate room so... Can I sleep here on the floor tonight?" Fuck, Roman was surprisingly good at providing euphoria and validation for a straight cisgender guy. Virgil had absolutely nothing physical apart from clothes to signify he was a male but Roman didn't care. It was nice.
"Sure, sure..." Virgil mumbled and threw some pillows off his bed to the floor, collecting a blanket from downstairs. That night Virgil and Roman did in fact sleep in the same room but they didn't speak to each other. After all, they were just new acquaintances – even though Mr Watson might have wanted to a romance or even a strong friendship wouldn't start after a group project and a sleepover.
