Summary: After recovering from the surprise morning cuddles, Roman has a day of work. And Patton gives his coworker the courage to actually ask Virgil to be his boyfriend.
Every single disease decided to fight me so I've finally recovered! The next chapter is going to be juicy, it is NOT the last chapter, but I'll post it in the next few days.
Roman was still in bed by the time the door shut behind Virgil's frantic run out the bedroom, his eyes were wiped by his sleeve as he stared at his alarm again. He thought he wouldn't have to keep track of school-days in his thirties... Oh, how wrong he was.
Once he crawled out of bed and got in the shower he started to feel an unusual coldness. The shower was warm but it wasn't as warm as the bed was – it wasn't as warm as Virgil was. Roman visualised Virgil during the sleepy cuddle, his peaceful sleep and how he didn't seem to care that Roman had somehow brought his arms around him. So now Roman was standing in the shower, soaking wet, a hand over his furiously beating heart and his cheeks pink. That was what warmed him up during the already warm shower.
But the shower soon had to end and Roman felt cold again as he got changed. Once he was in a good enough outfit for school he could hear Virgil and Logan still laughing downstairs – but there were no shouts from Nathan.
"Hey buddy... Good morning!" Roman opened the nearby bedroom door and peaked in, thinking Nathan would be awake and playing with his dollhouse. He was still fast asleep surprisingly and cuddling a Tigger teddy against his chest. It was a shame Nathan had kindergarten otherwise Roman would happily take Nathan in his arms and carry him around high school all day. At least he could do half of that this time.
Nathan shuffled in his father's arms as he slowly woke. "Good morning Nate, do you want to say goodbye to Uncle Logan?" Nathan's eyes began to flutter as he heard 'Logan', but he didn't let go of his father's warmth yet. He hid in Roman's neck, just like Virgil did the night previous, and nodded slowly. Roman smiled at the warmth he was feeling and marched downstairs slowly to make sure Nathan didn't fall.
Even though Roman didn't believe he could feel any warmer, he felt on fire as soon as he met eyes with Virgil again. Virgil and Logan were together, Logan sitting on a barstool with his suitcase and laptop bag beside him and a hot coffee in his hands. Virgil was opposite and leant against the counter with a cup of hot chocolate between his palms. He looked up as he heard Roman walking down the stairs, his voice left his lips as he paused. There was a line of cream on his cupid's bow which Roman only noticed when the living room became silent. "Um... Nathan wanted to say bye-bye to Lo."
"Oh! Well, I'm sure you didn't have to wake him up for it." Logan chuckled and stood, stroking Nathan's curls and moving in front of Nathan's face when it showed. "You'll be good for your Dads, OK? And show them your chess moves." Nathan nodded sleepily, bringing out a hand and doing a little wave. Both fathers laughed at the sleepy wave. "I better be off, you have work soon right Jam-Jam?" Roman nodded, finally placing Nathan on the ground and watching him sleepily wander to Virgil's side. "I'll try to get a date organised with Remus." Logan finally whispered before grabbing his things and walking out the door. Roman did the same too, waving his son and Virgil goodbye beforehand so they could carry on with his adult day.

After half a school-day, Roman was pepped up. The morning hug really brought confidence into Roman's mind – he felt loud and proud and absolutely in love. Virgil didn't mind hugging him! Maybe this future wasn't so fantastical after all, maybe Roman should ask Virgil out when they're teenagers again. Not straight away, he needed to figure out if this night-time hug was just an accident first, but then... then Roman might get his one true love.
"Mr Jim Haaandsooome... Ah, finally! You were really stuck in your ol' noggin there!" Patton appeared out of nowhere in the school theatre, holding two takeaway Subway bags as he trotted down the dozens on steps it took to get to the stage area. "What were you thinking about?"
"Just... Virgil." Roman hesitated before saying Virgil's name, knowing how excitable Patton could be with his favourite couple. And with no surprise Patton's grin became wider as he unpacked a meatball sandwich he was hiding in the takeaway bag.
"What's he done this time to get you so happy?" Patton cooed, taking a bite of his chicken teriyaki wrap as he waited to hear more adorable stories from his favourite previous students.
Patton smiled more when he spotted Roman's sharp inhale and blushing cheeks when he took a bite of his lunch. He visibly hesitated again, looking to the side where his Romeo and Juliet script lay (the script he was teaching seniors). Patton was always amazed about how unconscious actions Virgil and Roman did while apart showed the teacher how in love they were. "He... um, he was just super sweet last night. I passed out last night and must have been so tired that I wrapped my arms around him. I don't know... I just woke up the next morning and he was wrapped around my arms."
"Or he wrapped himself in your arms!" Patton cheered and giggled, rolling his eyes when Roman gave him what seemed to be a look of shock. "Wasn't Virgil super clingy when he was pregnant with Nathan? He even drove all the way to the high school just to take you to McDonalds! I won't be surprised if he's entering that clingy stage a little earlier this time."
The fact that Virgil wasn't pregnant was stuck on the tip of Roman's lips, but he swallowed the statement as soon as it arrived in order to keep his cover. In a few days, or maybe a week, Roman wouldn't be having this embarrassing topic with his high school English teacher. "Maybe. He's just never done something like that yet. I love it though."
"I'm not surprised! You were super touchy with him in high school."
Now this was more information Roman desperately wanted. Not for any reason that involved him going home, purely because he got so happy imagining living high school proud of his sexuality with someone beside him that loved him. And that person being Virgil made it all a whole lot better.
Luckily Patton would never stop talking about his high school students' love lives. "I remember the first lesson back, when you were going to present that 'perspectives' poster like it was yesterday. You two walked in holding hands, Virgil asked for a meeting after class, and you asked to do the presentation the following day for Virgil's nerves. It was so sweet." Roman's cheeks were as rosy as his meatballs as he listened to the story like it was make-believe. Patton would still believe the story was fabricated to this day, he gave the same 'perspectives' lesson every-day and he was yet to see another love story so strong. "And inevitably when either of you were bullied afterwards, the other one of you were never far behind to grab a hand or put on arm around shoulders once the coast was clear. You were there for each other."
Roman paused for a second after the story and let a small smile free. "I know – knew – I wanted to marry him from that moment." He whispered softly, not stopping his visualisation of Virgil's sleepy bright blue eyes. "If I could ask him to start dating me all over again I'd do it right now – God I love him so much!"
The only problem now in Roman's mind was how he was going to ask Virgil on a date as adults that were supposably married. But he knew he wanted to do it. He couldn't wait.
