Summary: On a lazy morning Virgil gets a text from an apparent old friend he doesn't know - Logan Rubik. And Roman doesn't seem pleased this Logan is in his life.
I'm sorry Logince shippers I ship it too :( (and Analogical is my OTP so I had to make them friends XD)
When Virgil woke up the next morning he was hoping he would be back in his bed with Roman on the floor, but this was not the case. He woke up to a vibration on the black phone beside his bed eternally on charge. The phone screen was of a baby Nathan staring at the camera with wide eyes – but those baby eyes were blocked by a message from someone Virgil didn't know.
Logan Rubik - Hey bud, mind if I come over today?
Virgil elbowed Roman to wake him up. "Do you know who Logan Rubik is?" It took a few seconds for Roman to come to his senses but once he processed the question he pulled a disgusted face. "What was that face about?"
"Why has he texted you?" He snapped back, his voice low and slightly husky as he wiped his eyes a little. Virgil looked at his previous texts with this 'Logan' – they seemed like normal texts two friends would send each other with jokes, memes and taunting. The texts weren't daily but seemed endless and to start out of nowhere with random subjects that made Virgil laugh looking back. Roman raised an eyebrow watching him. "Are you two friends or something?"
"Seems like it." Virgil chuckled, sitting up slightly. Roman got out of bed and grabbed a hairbrush and a towel. "I guess he's coming over this afternoon?"
Roman shrugged and tried looking at neutral as possible, but Virgil could tell there was emotion hiding behind it. He wasn't going to push it though. Roman had already been so vulnerable revealing his sexuality and secret passion so asking for more would be rude and unrealistic – especially since they weren't even good friends before they time travelled.
Virgil - Yeah sure, just woke up tho so maybe come this afternoon?
Logan Rubik - Of course, it's a long drive anyway. See you about 4pm?
Virgil - Sounds great :)
The rest of the day Virgil was trying to figure out who this 'Logan Rubik' was. So, of course, the main method to refresh himself on his close friend was via social media. Surprisingly Virgil had kept his Instagram up all these years with semi-regular updates (more updates than he made in high school anyway). He had to scroll quite far back, before even the birth of Nathan, to find any mention of Logan. There were selfies during Virgil's college days where he was friends with his dormmate – Logan Rubik. But it still made no sense why Roman knew Logan before even Virgil did.
Virgil was just beginning to cook dinner when 4pm arrived, his clothes covered in paint from work and Nathan at his feet wanting to help. The doorbell rang exactly on the hour but wasn't answered straight away. "Ro! Can you get the door?" Virgil shouted into the living room, where Roman was sat on the floor cross-legged watching cartoons.
Roman mumbled but he eventually did answer the door, Nathan at his feet. "Uncle Logan!" The boy seemed to recognise Virgil's college buddy and leapt on him, and Logan happily took the hug and carried him inside with stifled laughter.
"Sorry about this meeting being such short notice, oh you're getting heavy little guy..." Logan mumbled as he tried to balance Nathan across his chest and stumble to the living room sofa, textbooks seemingly overflowing in a messenger bag over his shoulder and a pen stuck behind his ear and entangled between his ebony black hair and jet-black glasses. "Verge? I swear you keep disappearing on me."
"Here, here!" Virgil ran out the kitchen, wiping some residue with a kitchen cloth, and pointed back to the kitchen once he saw Roman to silently command him to take over cooking. Roman didn't look too pleased to have a visitor but at least kept quiet about it. "Did you need me for anything or did you just want to hang out?"
Logan's eyes however were glued to the small corridor where Roman hid in the kitchen trying to figure out how to fry dim sum. "Is Roman alright?" He whispered under his breath, looking at Virgil for an answer. Virgil could only shrug – so far Roman had been pretty open with previous secrets but this behaviour seemed to be unaccounted for. "You alright Jam-Jam?" That nickname seemed to cause a crash to come from the kitchen and Roman swore under his breath – Logan just looked more confused.
"I've got a headache." Roman said plainly, walking to the archway between the kitchen and where Logan and Virgil sat but not bothering to look at Logan. "I'll take Nate off your hands, come on little guy." Nathan left his toys to be by his father's side but seemed indifferent to where he played. The man then disappeared upstairs with his son. There was an awkward silence.
"Weird – he hasn't acted that way to Jam-Jam since we broke up."
If Virgil would be drinking water, he'd be spitting it out. Roman had a boyfriend? Was it before he met Virgil or did Roman start dating his friend's college buddy later on? It seemed like the prior one. Luckily cooking dim sum was keeping Virgil's nerves down and Logan was happy to stand idly in the kitchen instead of sitting on the sofa. He should act like he knew this information all along. "God, how long ago was that now?" He mumbled under his cooking. Logan glanced upstairs – at least it didn't seem like a bad break up until now.
"We met in eighth grade and dated from then until last semester of freshman year. I guess it was a long time ago now." Logan laughed, checking one of his hand's nails and stuffing the other hand in his pocket. "Glad he ended up with you though. He's so much stronger with you."
Well, it had been just over six months since Logan and Roman broke up – at least in terms of where the couple's brains were at. So it was understandable for Roman to be acting this way. Not that Logan should know that though. Right now Logan should just think he's hanging out with friends. "Are you staying for dinner? I'm not sure if I have enough for another serving..."
Logan's memory then jogged for the reason he brought all his textbooks with him. He ran into the living room and emptied his bag, revealing half a dozen psychology textbooks. "I have a question about a study I'm teaching to my sophomores for GenderPsych." He began, and Virgil could already tell this was going to be a long and nerdy conversation. Logan seemed to be a teacher in this world. "There's a few studies by Cheryan et al that go into how room colours effect gendered behaviour and they go into colour theory and I was wondering if you could help me understand..." This guy could really speak and not breathe – impressive – but at least this was a conversation that seemed mildly interesting. Yeah, Logan seemed like a pretty interesting guy.
