Summary: Roman is a school teacher who really doesn't want to get up in the morning - but he knows it's all worth it when he sees the impact he's having on the next generation.
Some of the pictures for 'drama teacher' give such crackhead energy and I kind of love it XD
Roman was woken up the next morning by soft shaking side-to-side and Virgil in front of him, already dressed in what looked like his work clothes as they were covered in paint and other art materials. "Sorry, I got up at 2am and wanted to do art. But aren't you meant to be awake now?" Virgil asked, causing Roman to glide his one open eye to the alarm clock on his bedside table. It was 6am. "You have work."
The definitely-adult covered his head with a pillow and moaned. "School doesn't start until 8:20..." He whispered, or at least it sounded like a whisper to Virgil who was confused about how to get a teacher out of bed and ready for school.
"But that's when lessons start. You have homeroom starting at 8am... which as a student you should know anyway, and before that you have to register yourself at the front office and get your classroom supplies ready." Virgil tried to speak gently and kindly but now he understood why Roman never appeared around school before lessons and never looked sleep deprived.
After a few seconds Roman raised his head from a pillow, seemingly more awake due to his voice but he didn't look all there yet. "Do theatre teachers even have supplies to prepare?"
"I dunno. You're meant have scripts, right?" Roman mumbled an agreement but didn't move, only stared ahead of him in thought and contemplation. "Anyway, you still need to get dressed and ready all before homeroom. If you have extra time before leaving at least you can cuddle our kid."
Roman yawned and turned over hearing that – he definitely wouldn't mind playing with Nathan at all. "What am I meant to wear as a teacher?" He mumbled again as he wiped his eyes and yawned yet again. Virgil was already at the shared wardrobe pulling out buttoned shirts and bowties he'd only seen Logan wear before. The idea he'd wear such a formal outfit made Roman sit up. "Oh come on, I don't teach at Saint Sanders do I? There's no way I'm wearing that." Roman looked through the closet himself, too tired to focus properly on what he was looking at until his eyes landed on a t-shirt Virgil had seen before.
He blinked three times at the shirt and brought it out. "Huh... Wait..." He contemplated for a little bit, looking at the shirt and then at Virgil, before placing the t-shirt back in the wardrobe. "I'll deal with that thought later."
"And you'll shower and dress ready for school?" Virgil smirked, his hands crossed over his chest, honestly looking so pretty. Platonic beautiful though. Virgil was just aesthetically pleasing once he transitioned and gained confidence. And Roman was awake now so he might as well get ready for work – Virgil was a really good and natural parent.
"Yes Mom." Roman whined in a high tone, smiling wide and watching Virgil's expression turn into a giggle. The giggle showed the same expression Virgil was showing in that video with baby Nathan...

Lunch period as a teacher was a lot better than when Roman was a student. While students were stuffed in a messy canteen with dozens of sweaty, horny, and insecure teenagers Roman could escape the school building and order whatever takeaway he wanted and even a cup of coffee. But lunch break was way too short for Roman's liking and he had to return to his classroom in the theatre room before he'd even finished his coffee.
Around a double dozen freshmen were sat on the stage and seats, chatting loudly and joking in their small groups that they didn't dare to reach out of. Two groups stuck out in particular – a group of guys, some in varsity sport outfits and some not, sharing misogynistic jokes and pick-up lines. Another group seemed a lot friendlier and were a band of misfits with pride flags and cat ears galore. He would have loved that group in school.
"Right, right guys!" Roman raised his voice slightly, sipping some coffee as the groups began to quiet and pay attention to the teacher. From failures of lessons previous Roman knew he was horrible unprepared for this Monday and he wanted to assure no-one suspected anything. "What were we learning last lesson?"
"Actor placements on a stage Sir!" One of the more comforting students with curly black hair and a he/they pronoun pin, raised his hand and shouted proudly. Roman smiled back and nodded – he needed to plan this class on the spot it seemed. "And you said last class we were going to practice our scene this week!"
Thank God this kid was a saviour. "Ah, right. Thank you." Roman gathered some of the scripts he printed after finding them saved on a memory stick and named 'scripts for freshmen'. "Is it Flat Spin?" All the students nodded. "Great, are your groups prepared?" The judging teen audience to Roman's improvisation looked at each other confused.
The scripts outlined the groups had to be a mix of 'male' and 'female' actors – stupid gender roles. He had to make this classroom a more accepting environment. Luckily future Roman had already thought of this issue by giving him two stickers, one in the shape of a 'b' and the other in the shape of a 'g'. The students recognised these stickers straight away and Roman had to give hardly any instruction. They just chose their roles, improvised names if needed, and were happy with it.
After the class the freshmen seemed to filter out without much complaint to their next classes. Roman could finally sit down, taking a deep breath and fiddling with his empty takeaway coffee cup. His brain was thinking about the t-shirt he found that morning. Could he be gay? He thought all his crushes were on guys. Well, he did have a small crush on Virgil in sixth grade. Only a fleeting one – and it was when he presented as a girl. That was really the only reason he used the label bisexual. Virgil did look better as a boy though... Ugh, why was sexuality so hard to understand.
"Mr Krol?" A student appeared in front of Roman when he finally was brought back to this world of being a teacher. It was one of the freshmen in the group of sport jacket wearing boys, although he looked a lot more nervous than he did in class. "Can I talk to you about something?"
"Of course bud." It was lucky Roman didn't have to recount any of his students' names, they just seemed to be used to pet names and ridiculous nicknames. "You know you can tell me anything that's on your mind." After taking a deep breath the student's shoulders lowered slightly. He looked at his feet and seemingly was trying to hold back tears.
"How did you know you were gay Sir?"
Shit, Roman was literally talking to a younger version of himself if Roman ever had the balls to come out to a teacher or literally anyone. He had to say something he wished someone would have said to him back in his freshman year.
"Well, a combination of things really." He started off gently, pushing a seat out so the teen could sit down. "My friends were pretty outward on their attraction to the opposite sex and I never felt like they did. Instead I felt the typical crush things – you know – beating heart, thoughts of the future, wanting to kiss – with boys. Boys were just a hell of a lot prettier than girls too. It just felt right to deduce that I could only date the same sex."
That made sense. That made too much sense. Roman did fit the gay label rather than the label of bisexual. Roman was gay. He had to say something else. "The main thing is – if you feel like saying you're gay would relieve you even a little bit, it would put some stress off your shoulders, then you might be. But labels can always change and become something different if you need them to be."
The student sniffled but smiled, thinking for a second and then raising his head. "Thanks Sir..." The boy mumbled, fiddling with his fingers and looking at them for a while before speaking again. "I'm gay Sir." He said quietly, only smiling again when he saw Roman's comforting smile. "My friends won't accept me though."
"I'm sure there's someone that would." Roman mumbled, turning on his laptop as he really wanted to see who this student was. "Isn't there that group with all the pride flags?" The boy nodded shyly, explaining that he was planning to talk to them during the lunch period but he got too nervous and ducked out.
As the student left, encouraged to talk to the pride flag group about his sexuality, Roman finally figured out his name by looking at the registers. His name was Thomas Sanders.
