TW - Mention of dysphoria and homophobia from 'friends'. But if any of you have 'friends' like these they don't deserve you.
After the surprising wake up Virgil and Roman gather their thoughts of this whole situation - talking about the changes they had gone through and how they really thought about their past.
Showers had always been a necessary evil for Virgil. He'd turn the temperature almost too cold to stand so that he wouldn't waste money on heating bills and stand there with his eyes closed just enough to rub himself with shower gel, rinse, and maybe clean his hair. He felt sick after from just feeling his body and he wouldn't feel better until he was covered in layers and layers to hide himself.
This shower was different in this new world. Even though he could hear the laugh of a man he only met the day before and the giggle of a child he didn't know he just felt himself in this shower. A hand brushed through his dyed hair as he looked down at himself – he hadn't done that since he started puberty – and he liked what he saw. He wasn't cisgender but he had undergone top surgery as evident by scars on his body. His fingers traced the scars as he washed himself and he realised they didn't hurt or even looked sore. "I did it... A while ago..." He whispered to himself under the hum of the shower. One of his life goals was to be able to afford top surgery and he seemingly achieved it at least by the time he was 30.
It was nice for Virgil to see his wardrobe full of stuff he actually wanted to wear instead of baggy t-shirts and a pink dress he avoided looking at. Most of his clothes were still black with small amounts of purple involved. Only half of the wardrobe had Virgil's black abyss and the other half was full of colours and designs. "Huh, he actually knows there's more colours than red." Virgil laughed to himself in the empty room as he fully embraced talking to himself. He chose what he was wearing and even though he was still in a bath towel covering his bottom half he snooped in Roman's clothes.
White shirt, that's normal. Red and white Christmas jumper, interesting. He has a blazer? He would never expect the kid that threw paper airplanes in math class to dress fancy. With bowties too? Now Virgil was bursting out in laughter trying to imagine his spoilt classmate doing anything relating to adulthood. After a few more dozen shirts Virgil reached a shirt that made him pause. "I'm gay and I'm proud?"
"Hey, hey... What you doing?" Virgil's usual anxiety came back as he heard the door open and Roman burst in with a wide smile. Luckily Roman could sense the mistake as soon as he opened the door and the door slammed again. "Sorry about that! Good to see you're up though – Kid's watching TV, you want pancakes?"
It took a second for Virgil to retrieve his breath even though he had gathered that adult Roman had probably seen adult Virgil in a lot less than a towel before. "Yeah thanks, I'll be down in a second." After Roman's footsteps got quieter Virgil got changed in silence, scared to talk and possibly let Roman in his thoughts again. He wasn't used to people being in the same house as him.
The kitchen seemed to be buzzing with noise when Virgil finally emerged downstairs, noise coming from the living room television and decorations covering the counters. The smell was irresistible too (and was honestly the reason Virgil came downstairs). And finally, Roman was still in pyjamas of an old, ripped t-shirt and some joggers and he was covering circles of batter in all different types of sugar and sweet things.
"Good morning Hot Topic." Roman cheered and grabbed two plates of pancakes, winking at Virgil and smirking. He looked way too relaxed for someone who had just travelled through time so a conversation was certainly needed.
"Aw... You think I'm hot."
Roman only responded to that comeback with a scoff, rolling his eyes and checking the living room for the hyper child the two teens-now-adults were living with. "You look like a blueberries kinda guy. Enjoy yourself."
Virgil sat at the table and smiled, seeing one pancake covered in sugar and blueberries and another with jam, strawberries and cherries. Nathan came bursting in when the smell of sugar reached him. He was given a normal butter and honey pancake (a little smaller than the ones for the adults). Roman and his mini-me started eating immediately but Virgil didn't – his pancake wasn't ready. "Do we have any tofu?"
Obvious questions laid on Roman's expression as Virgil found the tofu and began sprinkling it on the buttered pancake, Nathan didn't even bat an eyelid. When Virgil sat again an awkward silence came across the family – if you could even call them that. Nathan finished all his pancakes in three mouthfuls and watched Roman expectedly for his next task. "Can you choose what clothes you want to wear buddy?" Roman asked with jam dripping from his mouth. The kindergartener nodded excitedly and ran away again, leaving the two 'adults' to talk.
There were so many questions, so many that it seemed like there'd never be time to answer them all. And surprisingly tofu on pancakes did not seem like a priority. Roman was now watching Virgil intently, nervousness coming over his expression again just like he did before he got that phone call. There needed to be something to break the silence.
"Are you surprised you're married to me?"
Hesitation read on Roman's face as he processed that question, glancing for a moment at the silver ring Virgil put on his left ring finger and the golden ring on his own. After what seemed like eternity Roman finally spoke. "I'm surprised but not astonished..." He said slowly as if trying to order his thoughts around this whole thing too (which he obviously was – neither of the teens quite prepared for this situation). "It was what I was going to tell you about last night. I'm pretty sure I'm bisexual."
That t-shirt in Roman's wardrobe said differently, but Virgil understood how scary coming out was, so he wasn't going to paint unneeded doubt in his classmate's mind. The varsity soccer player tensed up when revealing his sexuality but then immediately relaxed once Virgil smiled at him. It appeared he hadn't finished explaining his lack of surprise. "Honestly though, I'm surprised I ended up with you. I thought I'd head to college and experience dating there – not 'falling in love' while in that small town." Roman laughed cheerily to himself and picked up his and Nathan's plate, cleaning the plates quietly. "What about you? Are you surprised about anything?"
Virgil shrugged and thought through all the changes that had happened, subconsciously stroking the biggest change of his flat chest that made his comfortable male-framed outfits actually fit nicely. As for marrying Roman, he never thought about love in high school when there were so many issues going on in his brain, so he wasn't sure how he ended up ever falling in love with someone so different from him. "I find you a little annoying in school." Virgil laughed, causing Roman to gasp and laugh too. "You definitely gave the whole girl-crazy teenager vibe."
"It's mostly pretend. I have a preference for guys but my friends don't 'believe' anyone could like the same gender." Roman sighed again as he spoke. The popular boys in that small-town school did give that vibe and it was unfortunate – it was one of the reasons why slurs were of common use in Virgil's direction as he felt as though he had to come out to some extent. It made sense why Roman hid it. "Hopefully I'm not in touch with them anymore."
"I'll be by your side if you are." Virgil smiled back, letting Roman sit opposite him. The two sat there in quiet for a while, talking about their sexualities and gender and getting to know each other better. If they were to raise a child together until they were teenagers again they should know each other like they had been dating and married for all these years. And it was nice – at least for Virgil – to sit and eat with someone after years of practically being alone.
