The Look

Summary: Virgil has his first 'day of work' and he absolutely adores it. He doesn't account for the fact that his mind starts to wonder into unusual territory surrounding his husband though.

Sending Nathan to kindergarten was surprisingly quite easy. As soon as he reached the building he ran inside and happily greeted his teachers before running to his friend group that seemed to be the entire class all sitting by the cubbies. "Are you going to say goodbye to your Dad Nathan?" One of the teachers called in Nathan's direction, realising Virgil leaning against the doorframe and watching his son probably more than usual.

Nathan waved back before chasing a friend around the classroom and roaring like a dinosaur. Virgil smiled and waved back. He got a serotonin kick watching a little version of himself actually be happy – and Nathan was happy a lot. The wave gave assurance (and reminded Virgil of his dislike of conversations) enough for Virgil to walk away and make his way home.

Unlike most people Virgil still had vague memories of his first day in kindergarten. His mother dropped him off in the classroom and walked away, abandoning him, and the teachers tried to entertain him but were bombarded with plenty of other kids. The kids around him seemed to all have their friendship groups and were not bothered to talk with him. That's how he spent everyday up until high school, a few friends came and gave him memories he'd never forget but they moved away to better places just as quickly. That's why Virgil was the loner in high school and stayed under everyone's nose without many people noticing him. His mother always asked why he had no sleepovers or days out or dates but he was pretty happy being the way he was. He was Mr Invisible.

Virgil had the most fun at work, although his teen self didn't think he'd ever say that. He read through his notebook of requests and circled ones he felt like/had to do that day, the sound of his 'emo playlist' quietly in the background even though he wouldn't disturb anyone having it on full volume. By the time he was actually working on his projects Virgil was starting to sing along to his songs.

"I'll take you home if you don't leave me at the front door..." He started to murmur, hanging someone else's wedding photo on some fairy lights by a laundry peg.

"Your body's cold but girl we're getting so warm..." Virgil swayed his hips a little at that lyric like he always did, he usually didn't think of anything when singing that lyric but this time his mind flashed to Roman. They had spent two nights sleeping next to each other now, it was still a little odd but at the same time it was becoming the new normal.

"And I was thinking of ways that I could get inside..." Get inside what? Wait, that lyric is kinky. Ew – especially since Virgil was just thinking about what it felt like sleeping next to Roman and how comfortable it was starting to feel. There was no way Virgil would even get close to have sex with Roman even though the neighbour Remus was seemingly alluding to it.

"Tonight you're falling in love, let me go now..." The back of Virgil's mind was still visualising Roman. Not doing anything with Roman of course, just visualising him. Visualising him playing and laughing with Nathan, the little version of him he was starting to adore and visualising how his chest raised and fell peacefully when he was in deep sleep and Virgil was struggling to sleep at 2am.

"This feeling's tearing me... Fuck you." This song was really playing with Virgil at the moment, so he paused it. He should focus on his work anyway. He didn't even know why he was so bothered about the song and its illusion to possible romantic feelings. There was definitely no love in his feelings for the man he now lived and had a child with.

The picture he was drawing was of a wedding photo, the wife in a beautiful flowing white dress and the husband smiling at her in a suit and tie. Just the type of wedding Virgil's mom wanted to see her 'daughter' in. As Virgil was drawing he wondered what his wedding day was actually like. Did he end up inviting his mom? Wait, he didn't have to wear a dress! That made him smile to himself. Roman would never force Virgil to do anything he didn't want to do – even high school Virgil knew that after knowing high school Roman for a day. He was sure Roman and Virgil had their dream wedding together, whatever that would be, and they were totally happy with their lives together before and since then.

It was the late afternoon, and Virgil was just finishing the last request he had planned to do that day, when he heard the front door open and close, and a shout come out. "I'm home!"

Nathan's shouts were heard as he greeted his dad after his day at work, he had been energetic since he arrived back from kindergarten (not helped when Virgil collected him and gave him a chocolate donut for 'being a good son' so he could see that addicting little smile). Under the music Virgil could recognise Nathan and Roman excitedly chatting – probably Nathan was telling his dad about the artwork he was making.

Virgil focused back on his drawing but was soon disturbed by trots coming down the stairs, slower than Nathan's so he knew he didn't have to look away from his art. Nathan would sprinkle all the equipment everywhere if Virgil didn't pay attention to him as soon as he appeared.

"Hey Jack Smellington." Roman's voice was quiet, probably from shouting at high school kids all day, and his voice seemed softer too possibly because he was relieved to escape that place. Virgil could never imagine being in a high school again even if he was paid for it.

"Hey..." Virgil responded just as quietly, he would ask Roman how his day was but he was too focused on the infant's eyes he was drawing to think of any complex sentences. Roman didn't answer at first and seemed to linger in the silence, coming closer to Virgil to inspect all the photos and finished artworks hung around him. Eventually Roman's eyes swerved from the art slightly above his eye level to watch the side of Virgil's face – his glance becoming more serious than absent minded as his hands stayed in his trouser pockets. He seemed to inspect every pore in Virgil's skin. "What are you looking at?"

Virgil didn't turn his head but expected Roman to look away like a normal person, but that was not how Roman functioned apparently. He was surprised to spot Roman's eyes widen for only a second and he blinked twice, slight pink arriving on his cheeks but only for a little while too.

Eventually Roman found his voice again and his laugh, nonchalantly leaning against the desk. "Do you know who Mozart is?"

This time Virgil did raise his head and give Roman a raised eyebrow. Virgil had attended every art extra-curricular he could in his entire schooling career, probably was going to end up at college for some kind of art subject and was employed as a self-employed artist. Of course, he knew who Mozart was! "Yeah? He's a Dutch painter from the late 1800s who did paintings like The Starry Night and Sunflowers." Roman had never attended an art class – how would he know more than the literal artist? But Roman was now holding a laugh and looking so... Virgil couldn't even describe it, but it made him smile too. It was a different feeling he hadn't had before. "He cut his ear off too – have you not heard of him or something?"

"You really need Google..." The only sentence Roman could laugh out was that before he got his phone out his pocket and began frantically typing. He looked so happy in this small moment – that was what Virgil was feeling. He never saw Roman as happy as this. He never saw Roman happy. And finally seeing that happiness made Virgil feel a unique happiness too.

Google revealed that Mozart was a musician, and Van Gogh was the painter of The Starry Night and Sunflowers and cut his own ear off. Virgil couldn't help but stick his tongue out at the man opposite him. "Shut up, you know I hate you." He laughed, punching Roman's arm causing him to give the sweet look of expanded eyes he gave Virgil before. "You're too big-headed after being a teacher the whole day. Go make sure Nathan doesn't die and let me finish work. I'll cook duck wraps in an hour."

Roman laughed again, a little shyly, and stepped back to let Virgil continue his work. The shyness was new but Virgil didn't think of questioning it – he really had to finish all his work anyway. And Roman seemed happy to let him do that and play with adorable Nathan until dinner.
