Is This Comfort?

Summary: After Virgil's panic, Roman does whatever he can to make his friend comfortable. But this seems to have an inverse effect - and causes Virgil to experience a feeling he had never felt before.

I don't know if it's an ace thing to think of a feeling as anything else other than love but it's a mood XD.

In the time it took for Roman to return home Nathan stayed by his father, speaking softly and pretending to take deep breaths with Virgil so he could copy. But he was quiet surprisingly – he must really know how to calm Virgil down. Maybe this was why adult Virgil wanted to add another kid onto all of this mess. It really wasn't a mess to begin with.

"I'm home! I'm home! Virgil!" The only loud voice was Roman as he ran into the house, probably still in his gym clothes as his pits were drenched in sweat, but he was soon by Nathan's side. "You did a good job Nate! You feeling alright Virgil?"

Virgil gulped before he spoke, imagining the nerves releasing his shoulders and spilling down to his fingertips. "Yeah, yeah. It's just been a big day today." He mumbled in a low growl, keeping his eyes on his fingers even though Roman was trying to meet his eyes. Bless him – he had no clue how to deal with someone else's panic attack and it showed. His fellow jock friends weren't that down with talking about mental health, they were often found hyperventilating in the school bathrooms before games.

"Nate – can you put my gym bag in my room please?" Roman chirped, and Nathan happily grabbed the red bag. Once he had disappeared upstairs Roman released a soft smirk and sat directly next to Virgil. "Come here." He said gleefully, lifting an arm to summon Virgil to lean in. This was very new.

For teenage Virgil, he was always alone before, during and after panic attacks. They were just a 'him thing'. Just an inconvenience that made him stop what he was doing before he had to catch up with the life that was going around him. Not even his mother gave him the time to just pause time away from the debilitating panic he ensued.

So he gently leant in, ready to flinch upright if this was a bad idea but it surprisingly wasn't. Roman smelt of sweat and exercise and his chest rose and fell slightly quicker than normal since he ran into the home but it was still somehow comforting. And it was also comforting when his middle finger stroke Virgil's upper arm gently. They were both silent.

This moment made Virgil feel warm – that is the only way he could describe it. He felt safe to just take his time. "This is nice." Virgil whispered, absorbing the feeling of Roman's chest bounce as he laughed.

"Do you want to talk about it?" The low mumble of Roman's voice caused his chest to vibrate, and again the pair silenced before Virgil slowly spoke. "Don't feel like you have to."

"I don't want to talk about it when Nathan's around." Virgil's eyes flicked upwards in time to see Roman nod, as he stared into the distance and focused on the middle finger stroking. The angle Virgil could see Roman this time was new, just his jawline and one of his hazel eyes. This angle seemed more intriguing than the other ways Virgil viewed his accidental bed-mate.

There was that warm feeling again, the one that started in Virgil's throat and spread across his cheeks. Why was breathing getting difficult again? "What do you want for dinner?" Roman whispered, his face turning slightly away to let Virgil breathe.

"Whatever?"

"It's your choice – unless decision making is bad for you right now." Roman's face turned back to face Virgil directly, since when were they this close? Why was Virgil even thinking about that? OK, maybe post-panic attack comfort was a bad idea.

But Roman didn't seem to complain when Virgil leant away from his arm in silence, instead hugging his knee and staring at the floor. Roman only smiled softly before mirroring the same pose. His eyes were luckily on the kitchen though. "Do you mind if I nap upstairs?" Virgil managed to choke, receiving yet another smile that exploded Virgil's brain cells.

"Of course not! How about some seafood ramen, since I know you love it?" Wow – Roman really knew Virgil well. It was calming and anxiety inducing at the same time. Once Virgil nodded Roman ran into the kitchen, obviously still on an activity high from his gym session. He should ask Roman how that gym session went but he was pretty tired. It was time for a nap.

Virgil shuffled out of his dream-state by hearing a knock and the opening creak of the bedroom door. "Hey Verge, how are you feeling?" Roman's voice chirped through the door, closing it as soon as he walked in and making his way towards the bed with a steaming bowl. "I've got your ramen, and Nathan's just finishing a Bluey episode before eating, but I'll eat with him downstairs."

Roman rambled on with everything he thought would help, leaving the ramen bowl on the bedside table, while Virgil avoided his eyes. "You're being too nice Prince Underarm Stink." Virgil joked, spinning the ramen noodles with his chopsticks.

"Well, I hope I'm helping." Roman laughed back, his hands behind his back as he spoke. "Do you want to talk about your feelings yet?"

It was interesting to see how assertive Roman was when talking about feelings, it was nice to see that someone cared. No-one really cared if Virgil felt down before apart from Mr Watson. And now Mr Watson was the reason for this uneasiness apart from the weird warm feeling Roman was causing now. Roman sat gently on the bed cross-legged.

"You know I visited Mr Watson today?"

Roman's face immediately lit up, and his smile became wide. "How is he? Is he still super hyper and cuddly with you like he is with me? I mean I literally work with the dude and he still calls me kiddo just like he did as a student." Roman was laughing and joking like nothing was wrong. Everything was wrong.

"Yeah, well, he's good but he asked me something and it made me panic." Virgil couldn't help but laugh at his predicament, he really did panic over everything. But Roman seemed invested and even leant forward. "He asked me if we were having another baby, like via pregnancy, and when I panicked in silence he took that as a yes so now he thinks we're having a baby."

Virgil thought Roman would view this slip up as negative, and maybe even shout and scream at him. But that didn't happen – he just smiled and laughed more. "Really? Remus thinks we're having another baby too!"

Roman then began to explain his day too, meeting the annoying neighbour who was actually a middle school acquaintance once Roman reminded him. But the fact they had both messed up their words today assured Virgil he wasn't that big of a fuck-up. As the pair talked the warm feeling came into Virgil's throat again – but he accepted it – maybe even liked it. He liked feeling safe and loved in this weird universe of being an adult.
