Summary: Virgil spends the afternoon playing with Nathan and in the evening he was gifted a special present by Roman. His life is peaceful... And maybe he can get used to this.
"Dad's going to be back soon Nate, and he's super excited to see your drawing!" Virgil was sat playing dolls with Nathan, a peaceful break from the pacing back and forth he'd done in the art room all day. Nathan was a light of sunshine whenever Virgil was stressed – he always smiled and wanted to play and have cuddles and chat. This child was healing Virgil's inner child too.
Unfortunately, it seemed as a teacher, Roman hardly returned from school directly when the school-day ended. Virgil should get used to that he supposed, this was going to be his life now... God, this would be Virgil's life now.
Virgil flinched at the five-year-old that collapsed on top of him in a hug before he even realised he was frowning. "Wow, what's up kiddo?" Virgil laughed, hugging the boy back and burying his face into his curly brown hair. Nathan settled on Virgil's lap, smiling up, mirroring the smile his other dad had been wearing the last few weeks.
"Why have you been sad?" Nathan's smile disappeared, instead his expression showed earnest concern. Virgil raised an eyebrow and tried to laugh.
"What are you talking about? You make me happy, Nathan – by just being yourself. Why do you think I'm sad?" Speaking to Nathan was healing his inner child, maybe that was why Virgil had to time travel here. Nathan was the vessel in which Virgil could talk to the scared and abandoned child inside him and give him big hugs.
But Nathan didn't seem to care about what his father was saying though, he just stayed in the hug and whispered. "You and Dad keep on whispering to each other, and it's not by birthday or Christmas anytime soon! And Uncle Logan and Janus came to visit a lot, and you keep on having your shakes... Is there a secret?"
Nathan looked up with pleading blue eyes, eyes that broke Virgil's heart to look at. He couldn't continue to hurt Nathan like this. He was innocent in all of this.
Virgil held both of his son's hands and looked into his eyes. "Nathan, I can promise you nothing is wrong. We'll tell you if there is. But there's no need to worry." Virgil was strangled into a hug again and met Nathan's giggles with honest laughter, he began tickling the kindergartener until there was finally the sound of the door opening.
"Dad!" Nathan screamed and ran down the stairs, immediately leaping into Roman's arms as soon as the door was closed. Roman struggled to hold the boy at first as he had his backpack on his back and a black shopping bag across his shoulder. But Roman was still laughing and ruffled Nathan's hair as he placed the bags down.
Roman naturally jumped into fatherhood after his full day at work, asking Nathan if he wanted to play soccer as soon as the bags were down. As Nathan ran outside Roman swerved to Virgil – whispering quietly. "After dinner, we'll give Nathan a peaceful bedtime. We should chat about... our new life."
Virgil took the freedom from Nathan to continue his work in the art room, he needed to learn all the specialist skills adult Virgil probably learnt at college. Right now, Virgil relied on YouTube videos to get him through, but now he needed to learn his stuff. He needed to pack over ten years of learning into his head before his five-year-old got a handle on what was going on... That was a lot of pressure.
But soon came dinner, and Virgil loved cooking almost as much as his art so spoilt Nathan with his favourite meal of vegetable rice with chicken Kiev. Nathan's smile when he saw the food after running around for a couple hours was worth it. Nathan's smile was worth everything.
Evening soon came though, and Nathan's door was shut as soon as he was asleep. At first Virgil and Roman just looked at each other – unsure where to have this chat that was going to affect the trajectory of their lives from this point forward. Virgil's day clothes suddenly felt too tight. "Can I get into pyjamas before talking?"
Roman gently smiled and nodded. "Of course, let me just get my stuff and I'll get changed in the bathroom."
While Virgil was getting changed he tried to imagine the gap in his life, where he changed from a broken teenager in a solitary home to owning a house with a husband and kid. The house was amazing in all honesty – once Virgil had his pyjamas on he couldn't help staring out the window. The back of the house showed a medium sized garden surrounded by trees and the front of the house showed a road and forests the other side. It wasn't much, but it was a dream. Virgil had achieved his dream... He just needed to be comfortable in it.
"Are you changed?" Roman opened the door to a slither and poked his head through, his hand covering his eyes. Virgil mumbled a 'yes' which allowed Roman to stroll in and shut the door again. "Do you feel alright?"
"A little nervous, but yes." Virgil sat on the bed and Roman settled the other side, both men sat cross-legged and silent. All Virgil could think about was his son's baby blue pleading eyes. "Nathan is suspicious of us – he knows we're not acting right."
Roman nodded, scratching his beard and pulling on the strands. "Yeah, we need to figure out how to live like before. But a few weeks ago I was watching baby videos with Nathan and..."
"There's baby videos?"
Roman's cheeks reddened at the interaction, and he fiddled with his hands, only nodding, and not finishing his sentence. To Virgil though, there was no reason baby videos wouldn't help Virgil and Roman settle into their new life. Not only would it be adorable to see a little Nathan but it would also help bridge the gap they'd missed. At least five years would be recovered into Virgil and Roman's memory. "Can we watch them?"
Although Roman hesitated for a second he nodded, mumbling about needing to get his laptop but then pausing again as he laid eyes on the black bag he must have placed in the corner of the room earlier in the day. "I actually got you something first." Roman smiled and grabbed the bag, eventually bringing out what looked like a black hoodie. "I thought... Because I didn't know how worried you'd be about all this – I got you a present."
The hoodie landed in Virgil's hands as Roman passed it, a small smile on his face as he sat down again. Virgil unravelled the hoodie and smiled at the design – a black hoodie with purple patchwork and white seams. "It's handmade, the textile arts teacher has started her own business, so I gave her my support. And to others this present can be seen as romantic – but for us it can be platonic."
Virgil wrapped the hoodie around his body and enjoyed the warmth it gave – it was definitely very well made. "Thanks... I love it." Roman chuckled and smiled as Virgil's lips met the hoodie sleeve. He then stood up again and disappeared in order to find his laptop. Virgil stayed under the red covers of his double bed, his hoodie close to his face as he enjoyed the silence of this new house where he still faced so much love.
