A piece of a long-dead tree snaps and the figure in camo whirls. The M1911 was drawn from his holster in a flash in the dark, the cigarette in his mouth the only glow in the night.
"I'm unarmed and simply wish to speak, Commander."
K:"Colonel, there are little two opposing forces should speak of."
"This has nothing to do with what you're about to commence. I simply wish you hear my story."
K: "If it's a story. I'll listen."
"Thank you. I moved from a private in the army before it became known as the KCCO yes? The squad I was in as a sergeant, was stationed in a remote village near the border with Ukraine, simple people, simple life, I wished to retire there after my service."
K: "But duty it calls doesn't it."
"You speak true and I say thank you. We received orders to pull out into the forest, no excuse, no reason."
K: "The rebels came."
"Yes. They did, they came and razed it to the ground when they heard we were stationed there, we could hear the gunfire and when the wind blew.. the screams came."
K: "...."
"The lucky ones died after they were raped and tortured, the few left we could not save them, we could not spare them our bandages nor even morphine. I cried that night, many others did too."
K: "You wish to confront the man that did this."
"I do, and I hold no grudge against you for being in this with him. Soldiers follow orders."
K: "I've traveled among many villages as rural as you described, my career is long and full of unpaid tabs."
"I come to request one more tab."
K: "You shall have him, this operation was a failure in the first place."
"Yet you carry through and use your troops?"
K: "Soldiers follow orders."
"Nyet. The ones that don't, live."
K: "Our talk is over, best you return to your men before they grow suspicious and you earn a bullet from my adjutant."
M4 steps into the small clearing in the woods, rifle raised as she stops feet between the camouflaged men.
"Spasibo."
K:"Let him go, he means no harm M4."
The man steps back through the brush quietly and softly, stirring neither animal nor plant as he heads back in the direction of his command.
K: "Good men end up on the wrong side sometimes M4, would you agree?"
"Yes Commander."
K: "Lets head back, my cigarette is burned out and I have a promise to fulfill."
Rodyn depots. 10:00PM. Office of Colonel Chenko:
"After all these years.. I've done it for you Lynni.. I'll make the bad man pay.."
The man sitting behind the desk straightens up at the knock of the door, stowing away the worn and fading photograph, he drys his eyes and calls.
"Come in."
"Colonel, you requested my presence."
"Ah yes, take these two pictures, memorize their faces well and distribute them among your men, they are not to be fired upon if they do appear here."
"Yes, Colonel."
