Back in Pallet Town, there was a celebration for Ryu Gary Ash and Leaf making it into the top 16.
Oak: Congratulations you four!! You've made everyone in this town very proud!
???: Same here, you all have grown up so much faster than anyone here thought!
The woman that said this was the mother of Ash.

Delia: I can't believe my son has gotten so far in the Indigo League!!
Ash: Aww, mom.
Leaf: That's sweet.
Everyone was having a good time as Ryu was with Mewtwo speaking about something very interesting.
Mewtwo: Wait, so you say that you don't feel that presence around you?
Ryu: Nah, I honestly don't know what you mean.
Mewtwo: I thought everyone would have noticed. There's a feint presence around you that resembles a Pokémon. It's quite possible that everyone did notice at one point but then stopped thinking it was a figment of the imagination.
Ryu: Well you are a Psychic Type. Shot in the dark, you can sense more. But anyway, how's life been treating you Mewtwo?
Mewtwo: Things have been going well. Professor Oak has been a great help as a mentor and even friend. Though you humans are much more strange then I had first thought.
Ryu: Interesting. So, what moves do you have?
Mewtwo: Well, the Professor thought that only having Psychic type moves would "Hold me back in the long run" as he put it, so he taught me the move Stone Edge.
Ryu: Hm, a physical attacking move huh?
Mewtwo: I thought that it wouldn't suit me at first, but he recalled you telling him about how you used it as a way to lessen damage when using Blade.
Ryu: Oh right, I did tell him about the Stone Edge shield.
Mewtwo: Also, how?
Ryu: I have A LOT of time on my hands. Seriously if you think that's impressive, I taught Nova how to do it with Flamethrower. But back to the moves I get why he did. If I was a betting boy I'd say there aren't too many types you need coverage for, and even less you can learn for coverage.
Mewtwo: So I assume you won't use me in any of the Indigo League battles?
Ryu looked over at Mewtwo smiling.
Ryu: I never said that did I? Moltres can go to the back for a bit.
Mewtwo hearing this smiled.

It was revealed that Ryu would be the one to battle first. He took in a breath steeling his nerves.
