Belle screamed all the way back to the apartment. I sang Good morning, good morning!! a few times. Nothing worked. Suddenly, my bluetooth on my car rang. I answer on the second dial.

"Hello?" It was Theo. I press the speaker button.

"Hey, Shai. Is Belle okay?"

"She's doing great. Belle, say hey to dada!" I glance in my rear view mirror to her wet face. She aspirated the word Dada, then fully says it once Theo says her name again.

"Ah, I'm afraid I won't be home tonight. Stupid plane got delayed."

"Well, babe, Mom and Clara will be here. We're going to be fine."

He sighs. "You are sure you'll be safe?"

"Yes, Theo." I soften baby hairs that stuck off the sides of my head.

The other line beeped twice. "Shai, I think my brother is calling me. See you later, love you."

"Love you too."

Caller disconnected.

Over to my right I spotted a In & Out. I had craved a hamburger, fries and a vanilla shake. Going with my scrumptious cravings, I make a left towards the joint.

From In & Out I brought back hamburgers for Theo-if he gets home- and me, also a vanilla milkshake, Coke, and sprite.

"Ow!" I exclaim.

Belle hit at my face, nearly clawing at it.

"You hurt me!" I laugh it off, making her do the same. "You are a silly girl!"

Mom joined me on the couch. Flipping through magazines, she took Belle from my arms and let her lie on the floor, playing with her toys.

"Daughters are what mothers like to call their gifts," she started. "When this whole tumor blows over, I need you to promise me that you won't quit on neither Theo, Belle, or Ansel. They will leave you behind. Dead, this time. Save time like it's precious. Who knows how much time you have left."

Her voice was cold, and harsh.
