“You know, I think that they actually made the food this year. It's kind of decent. It just seems to be a little more hmmm how should I put this chef's kiss?”
“Mason, seriously? Do you need your tastebuds checked? This is the same crappy food like always. Ugh I don’t even know how you can keep shoveling more into your mouth.”
“Oh I'm sorry your highness, not everyone can meet your precious palette expectations Riley. Come on Syl you're on my side right? Today's food is good.” Mason questions me, bringing me out of my thoughts.
“Sorry what?” I asked him since I hadn’t been entertaining their conversation by paying attention.
“Ugh nothing. Maybe I should’ve just sat with my usual crew this year too. You guys are boringgggg.” Mason drags out, probably trying to make me feel bad for ignoring him.
“Well go ahead. No one asked you to come over here anyway. Plus your big head is blocking the sun from gracing my beautiful melanin skin.” Riley retorts for me as she throws a carrot at him. I smirk at them as they start up another argument. To outsiders it would probably look like the two hated each other but that was just their dynamic. Riley said it was because you can’t mix a gemini and a taurus and expect a good outcome. She had been getting deeper into astrology lately and it was finding its way into everything. I watch them argue for a couple of more seconds before turning my attention back to the food in front of me.
I didn’t have much of an appetite today. The snacks and food I had packed away for myself were still mostly untouched on the plastic baggies in front of me. It had just been a stressful day after having to restructure my school courses. Yeah the school made me change my schedule because of Mr. Buford's complaint to the office. He was most definitely now on my teacher's hate list. The only positive that came out of it though was that I no longer had to see Ashter let alone sit right next to him first thing in the morning.
“Hey Syl so what are you doing next weekend for your birthday?” Riley asks me as she reaches over to my food grabbing an apple slice.
“Woah woah wait, your birthday is this weekend?” Mason asks as he noses his way into our conversation. I glare at Riley and she simply mouths ‘oops’ at me before popping the apple slice into her mouth. She definitely did that on purpose. “Well come on. What are the deets? I'll move some stuff around.”
“There are no deets. I’m not doing anything.” I mumble as I fidget with my sandwich.
“Like hell you aren’t!!” Riley all but yells gaining us some looks from the neighboring picnic tables around us. “Syl you are literally becoming an adult. You have to celebrate. I am calling Cherry right now.”
“Don't you dare call my mom you evil little elf.” I say launching my body at her attempting to grab her phone that suddenly appeared in her hand. She moves it out of my reach at the last second, smirking as she voice commands her phone to call “besties mom”. I try to grab the phone again but she promptly jumps up from the table making me catch air and fall forward onto the bench of the table.
“Ow.” I whimper as I rub my now sore elbow as I continue to glare at my best friend. She simply grins as she holds her ear to her ringing phone.
“Oh well hello Cherry! How are you?” Riley starts as she gets a hold of my mom while giving me a triumphant grin. She moves away from our table heading off somewhere to scheme with the ring leader herself.
“Ugh whatever.” I mutter as I sit back upright in my seat.
“Aww Syl why don’t you wanna have a birthday party. They're the best. People get to fawn over you and give you free stuff. Plus there's cake and ice cream. You love ice cream.” Mason reminds me as he watches me nurse my elbow.
