Delphine didn't know if it was a new secret to her abilities or if it was just thick in the air, but she could feel Historia's anxiety. Or maybe she was just anxious herself.
She remembered feeling relief when she saw Noah... and then Oliver. Her stomach dropped however as she saw Lake, laying on her stomach in a carriage, along with many others.
Less than 50% returned.
She was grateful for any return at all.
Still seeing less than half of the entire scout army return was scary enough for her and the others.
Marlo, she remembered his name, had cuts and a terrible concussion. In fact nearly all of the soldiers had some form of cut, neither of them minor.
"This side has been fed your majesty," Matthew bowed, causing her to nod her head in a silent thanks.
She hoped the others wouldn't notice her lack of... anything. Not that they would, there were more pressing matters to discuss.
Delphine turned to Hange, "Are Mikasa and Eren in need of any healing before I start the next side?" She asked.
The scientist shook her head, "Both are asleep and knocked out cold."
Delphine nodded once. The silence was palpable and thick. She doubted you could cut it with a knife.
"What happened?" William finally asked the question Delphine nor Historia could bring themselves to ask.
Hange swallowed, her eyes moving from Moblit to Lake. Oliver taking a deep breath. Before either of them could begin to form a response Noah took the lead.
I think everyone though we would win. And truthfully we did as well. Maybe it was just false hope.
"It seemed to be going in our favor just for a second," Noah leaned against the wall.
Historia stood still, forcing herself to listen while Delphine busied herself, cleaning the wounds of Moblit, his left arm burned. Everyone quieted even those who had been there, others wanting to know what happened on the other side.
Hange sighed, "The first part of the plan went smoothly.... too smoothly in fact. Eren was able to seal one of the entrances, but it was just a part of their plan. They wanted us trapped," she looked down.
Moblit began, "We were able to pin the armored titan, until his friend came flying through the air. He transformed, killing many scouts old and new instantly," he gripped his first in his right hand, "Lake swooped in and grabbed as many of us as she could, she shielded us with her water."
The savior in question was sound asleep, William having dressed her wounds not yet healed by Delphine.
Noah chuckled humorlessly, "Then on our side he started throwing rocks. He took out the scouts positioned on the outside of the wall in seconds. Oliver and I were stationed with Levi, attempting to keep the horses out of view."
