I was grateful the clouds had decided to let the sun be seen for today. It seemed the rain had settled down for a little. The air felt fresh. I inhaled it, a smile present on my face.
Lunch was almost over for the cadets so I took this moment to myself to admire the empty training grounds. I wait for the day, the young soldiers and old will not have to train so hard. The day they can go home to there families or walk around the towns with there friends.
I could feel the pit in my stomach form, as the soldiers who'd lost their lives came to mind. So selfless and kind.
I was so busy trying to calm myself from the sadness that formed, I hadn't noticed the company of those around me, "Delphine, why are you crying?" I looked to my right noticing Noah's concerned expression.
Over his shoulder, Erwin and Hange were gathered as well. Hange with eyes of curiosity and Erwin with eyes of caution.
I chuckled, lifting my hand to wipe the tears I had no idea had fallen, "No reason," I shook my head, but he stepped forward, his gaze hardening.
I took a deep breath, "I was just looking at the training area. It's empty," I sighed, as Hange and Erwin stepped up next to me, "and I began thinking of the day when War will be behind us. Before I knew it my mind went to the soldiers who had been sacrificed, for the sake of humanity and merfolk," I turned to the Commander and then Noah, "I just wish no one had to die."
No one had said anything, but I knew they felt the same.
Noah stepped closer to me, lifting his hand to rest on my shoulder and pulled me close.
I could hear one of the others take a deep breath, "I must say. It's not everyday I meet a Queen who understands war as a soldier," Erwin spoke softly causing me to turn to him.
Hange shook her head, "War has always had casualties. I've almost forgotten the lives lost because it's easier to get the job done. I mean, we're the scouts. We've always had horrible casualties, but it's the price to pay for salvation."
No one bothered to say anything else. I felt bad for bringing them down to my mood.
It'd just been too long since I'd honored the sacrifices. There needed to be a day that would help me to remember at least once a month the brave soldiers, civilians and children who died to keep the others safe.
I shook my head, "I'm sorry, thank you for coming out to check on me."
Noah sighed, "What have I told you about apologizing? Besides I came to ask you about the meeting."
I turned to him confused, ignoring his first comment, "I told you it went well."
He lifted his eyebrow turning to me causing me to roll my eyes, "William told you," I sighed, "of course he did," I crossed my arms almost annoyingly.
