After the ceremony, Delphine found it easier to endure. Through smiling, handshaking, and masking. Somehow just being around her friends helped her to relax.
They were back again at the mess hall where they had their last feast with the whole company of scouts. Delphine didn't allow herself to hurt for them. Instead, she'd honor their sacrifices.
For now, though, she had promised Jean and the others to relax. Everyone was seated in a circle around the table. Somehow they all noticed how weighing the ceremony was. However, few of them knew the other reason behind it. Still relaxing proved a bit easier as she was surrounded by the main 9. The rest of the surviving scouts decided to eat outside, the fresh air better than being inside. Delphine couldn't blame them.
The table was filled and no one held Sasha back from the food. In fact Queen Historia piled more food onto her plate and the others fought easily back to themselves.
Delphine gently smiled, her gown free of the layer of tulle and her feet free of the heels. Now she was in gold sandals and her dress laid over her crossed knees.
The black tea in front of her was sweetened to her taste and her head felt lighter free of the crown that instead laid in front of her.
She had yet to look away from the loud ruckus, but if she had she would have noticed Levi observing her from across the table.
Levi recognized something different. Did she... cut her hair? No... somehow that doesn't make sense. Her dress was off the shoulder and her skin looked soft. However as she lifted the cup to her lips, there was a mark on her hand. It was darker than her skin and it appeared to be an indent that ran along the bottom of her palm right on her wrist. It was a scar no doubt in his mind, but it definitely wasn't there before.
Levi attempted to calm himself as he scanned the rest of her. Her other wrist had the same indent. And her cheeks... what the hell happened? Levi wondered if he was the only one who noticed.
"Delphine," Lake spoke up from the end of the table, did she notice? Levi pondered as the table quieted.
"Hmm?" Delphine turned gently, her shorter twists easily following her movement the weight of the hair lighter now.
"Why did you cut your hair?" Lake asked, curiosity gnawing at her. That is not what I had in mind, but that is a good question, Levi thought.
William stilled and Historia felt cold. It seemed the temperature had dropped. While Delphine gently set down her cup, her fingertips nearly froze the cup as she fixed her answer in her mind.
"It was getting too long," Delphine explained, keeping her voice level.
Lake furrowed her eyebrows confused she added, "But you liked it long?" Historia looked down as she now felt sick, the guilt reaching her again.
Before Delphine could process her question, William began shaking his head. Everyone looked at him. "Delphine, you need to be honest with them, surely you don't think we could hide this?" He looked up, his eyes building with tears as his voice sounded... fearful. He stopped trying to hide his shaking hands.
