Ned sat in the black cells of the red keep awaiting for his inevitable death.
He should have never come south. It had all started going wrong when Eddard's investigation reveals that Jon Arryn had taken an interest in Robert's numerous bastard children, including his son Gendry. He learns that Jon borrowed a particular book from Grand Maester Pycelle. Eddard read the book but at the time could not determine why the former Hand wanted it. A rift also opened between Ned and Robert when the Stark lord refused to sanction the assassination of Daenerys Targaryen upon hearing she was pregnant with Khal Drogo's child, nor would he conspire against the last living child of Rhaegar Targaryen, Rhaenya, who had most likely survived the second assassination atempt.
He later consulted The Lineage book again, after Sansa commented how Joffrey was a golden lion and nothing like his horrible father, and sees that in every match between a Baratheon and a member of another house, the Baratheon black hair always dominates. Shocked, Eddard realized that this meant that Joffrey and the other royal children were not Robert's and as a result, had no claim to the irom throne. Later when Robert was on his death bed, the dying king had Eddard write his will, naming him Protector of the Realm to rule until Joffrey comes of age.
After Robert's death, Joffrey wasted no time in taking the throne. Cersei destroyed the letter proclaiming Eddard as Protector of the Realm. And when Eddard tells Joffrey that he has no right to the Iron Throne and commands the City Watch to take him and his mother into custody, is shocked that the City Watch turns on him, attacks his men and kills them.
"How are you feeling my lord" asked the soft voice that belonged to Lord Varys. Ned looked up "what are you doing here?", "i come to see you and bring news." The eunich replied. "My daughters?" The prisoner asked. "Sansa is still engaged to Joffrey but Arya is nowhere to be found, alsoyour lady wife no longer has Tyrion in her custody." "When will i die?" The fallen lord said, "not today" was all Varys said before taking is leave. When Ned is visited by Varys once more, the master of whispers urges him to confess to treason in exchange for exile in the Night's Watch. Eddard still refuses until Varys says "Remember that the Lannisters still have Sansa as a hostage, and they need you alive to bargain with your son Robb, who is now leading an army to confront them." Ned let out a long shaky breath and said "very well, i'll confess". But the confession was useless for Lord Stark ended up being executed by kimg Joffrey Baratheon's orders. -------------------------------------------------------------- Robb Stark is afraid, he knows it and he has all the right be, he is ten and six and about to lead an army to war.
The young Wolf holds a feast for several of his newly-arrived bannermen. "For 30 years i've been making corpses out of men young wolf. I am the man you want leading this vanguard" says Greatjon of house Umber with confidence. But is quickly shot down when Robb states that it will be Galbat Glover to lead the van. Lord Umber, feeling humiliated threatens to withdraw from the host. In response, Robb promises that, after the conflict with the Lannisters, he will oust Greatjon from his keep and hang him for breaking his oaths to House Stark. This enrages the bannerman who goes to draw a weapon, but Robb's direwolf Grey Wind sets upon him, biting off two of his fingers.
