For the next week I managed to stay clear of Tsukishima entirely. I avoided him in mornings, I didn't go to volleyball anymore, and I hung out with Yachi and the others separately. I have felt better about it, but I've been trying to ignore the weird feeling of wanting to see him again. Although he's so mean to me, I kind of want to speak to him even if it's just to be insulted.
I stand at my locker, trying desperately to fix my hair and messily done up uniform. Why do I always look so messy?
"Long time no see," I flinch at the sudden voice and quickly spin around, met with Tsukishima's smirk.
"Y-yeah, long time no see," I stutter and mentally curse myself. He caught me off guard that's it.
"I've had a nice break from your constant whining," and there it is. Take a deep sigh, I close my locker and smile sweetly at him.
"Great talk Tsukishima," I say calmly before walking away leaving him confused as to why I didn't have another outburst like I usually do.
Tsukishima felt frustrated by my response. The past week I've been avoiding him was torture for him. He didn't know whether it was because he just had fun annoying me or for some other reason, it must be the first one. He's always excited to see how I will react to his teasing and get all angry, but today I didn't. He grits his teeth and shoves his fists into his pockets. This simply won't do, he needs to find a way to get close to me again.
"So, what are our plans for today?" Arai says as we eat our lunch together. Recently Arai and I have been spending heaps of time together, I would definitely consider him my closest friend.
"Hm... we could go see if the apple seed we planted has started growing?"
"I don't think it would've this quick," we snicker.
"Shibuki!" A classmate says and I look over to see Yachi in the doorway waving at me.
"Yachi! One sec Arai," I say walking over to her.
"Hey! I have something to ask you," she says and I nod. "Tonight there's a carnival that everyone on the volleyball team is going to, do you wanna come with?" She says and I beam, but something is holding me back.
"Everyone?" I say crossing my arms and she sighs.
"Tsukishima is going as well but relax! You'll be with me the entire night you won't even see him!" She says and I give in smiling.
"Oh, can Arai come?" I say and she tilts her head."
"Who?" I wave Arai over and he joins us.
"Yachi this is Arai my friend from track. Arai this is Yachi, she's the volleyball team manager," they smile at each other in response. "Yachi invited me to the carnival tonight with the team, do you want to come with?" I say and his eyes light up.
"Definitely! If that's ok?"
"Of course! The more the merrier! I have to get back but I'll text you details!" She says before waving and leaving.
"I'm so excited!" Arai says as we sit down and I nod excitedly in agreement. "The volleyball team... isn't that guy on it?" He says and I huff.
"Yeah... I'm just gonna try and avoid him," he pats my shoulder before puffing his chest our proudly.
"I'll beat him up if he gives you trouble!" He says and I snicker, punching his arm.
"You? As if you couldn't beat up my grandma!" I say and he glares at me, looking away with a pout as I laugh at him.
