"So what have you been getting up to recently?" Yachi says as I walk around the gym with her, picking up stray volleyballs.
"I've got my qualifiers next week... it's pretty nerve wrecking since Arai and I are the only first years so the pressure is definitely there," I say and she rubs my back.
"You'll do amazing I know it!" She says and I smile brightly nodding. "The team can come support you if you want!" My eyes widen and I quickly shake my head.
"No no that'll just make me more nervous if there's a bunch of people that I know watching me," I say and she nods. "Thanks though it was sweet to offer!" As we continue to walk, my phone begins to ring and I pull it out, seeing that Arai was calling me. "Give me a second, I've gotta take this," I say and she nods as I walk away to answer.
"Hey Arai!" I say. My cheery voice attracts the attention of the otherwise unbothered blonde, and he tunes in to my conversation curiously.
"S-Shibuki!" Arai says sounding startled. "I wasn't expecting you to answer... are you still at school?"
"Yeah I went to say hi to Yachi and the volleyball guys! What's up?" He clears his throat and stumbles over his words making me tilt my head. "What's up with you?" I giggle and he sighs deeply.
"I uh... I wanted to ask if you wanted to go to the movies with me... like a date?" He says and my eyes widen. A date? Arai asking me on a date? I had no idea he was even interested in me!
"A date?" I repeat confused and he chuckles awkwardly.
"I was going to ask you in person... but I chickened out so I had to do it over phone..." we both laugh over his confession and I bite my nail. I've never even thought of Arai like that, but who knows maybe he'll surprise me and I'll have a really good time.
"Uh sure! Why not?" I say with a smile.
"O-Oh really!? Ok cool! Um how about we meet this saturday at the cinema?" He says and I find myself smiling subconsciously, excitement about this date rising in my stomach.
"Sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow," I say before hanging up and holding my phone to my chest. This is the first time someone has asked me on a date, in fact this is the first time someone has ever showed any romantic interest in me. There's no way I can mess this up.
I pick up my stuff and say bye to Yachi before hurrying home, the blonde's eyes never leaving me as he grits his teeth in jealousy.

I shuffle my feet awkwardly as my sweaty palms grip my purse strap. I look down at my dress and fiddle with my neatly done hair. Did I dress up too much? Will he think I look dumb in a dress? God maybe I should cancel. No stop over thinking it's fine! Arai is your best friend it'll be fine!
I stand outside the cinema at the agreed time and look left and right, waiting to see Arai's smiling face. Biting nervously on my nails, I check the time on my phone every five minutes. People passed by but none of them were Arai... no matter how many minutes passed. Sitting down on the bench I bounce my leg up and down. He's probably just running late... I'll give him a call..
The phone rings and rings but he never picks up. Maybe he can't answer right now cause he's on his way? Eventually the minutes turned into an hour and I hug myself as I stare at my shoes. Has Arai seriously stood me up? I've called him five times and he hasn't picked up at all. Hearing a sudden boom of thunder, I look up at the dark clouds with a frown. I suppose I should leave to the train station to try and beat the rain.
