"dream please don't cry" george requested, monotonous.

the younger boy wiped his face, responding quietly, "i just don't get it," he whispered, "this is so sudden."

george couldn't even respond, immediately being cut off by a loud sob from the other.

after giving the blond a moment to let out a few more obnoxious cries, the brunette spoke, "i'm just not in a good place right now clay," he explained, void of any emotion, "i can't give you what you need in a boyfriend."

this ripped another choked sob from the other, "george," he wined sadly, "you are everything i need, i know you've been stuck in your head recently but please don't do this."

the older boy couldn't help but roll his eyes at the others begging, "i'm sorry dream." he spoke sternly, finalising the conversation before leaving the blonde's house.

the brunette was able to avoid his ex-boyfriend for three months after the breakup, even going as far as cutting of some of their mutual friends to avoid the possibility of them crossing paths.

the first time he caught sight of the older blonde was at a party punz threw to celebrate getting one hundred thousand followers on twitch.

initially, he was unaffected by the presence of the blonde, hardly even sparing him so much as a brief glance when he entered through the door.

this quickly changed when, no more than a few moments later, a short brunette girl walked in, immediately making her way over to dream and linking their arms together.

the taller blonde lent down slightly to peck her cheek and george felt like someone had just kicked him in the stomach.

george found himself unable to rip his gaze away from the pair, only shifting his vision when the two turned so they were vaguely facing his direction.

dream hadn't even seemed to notice george.

when george tried to discreetly steal another glance of the couple he was able to see the shorter girls face, considering she no longer had her back turned to him.

the brit couldn't help but raise a shocked eyebrow at her appearance, taking note of how similar she looked to himself- brown eyes, brown hair, short and slim, long eyelashes, practically perfect teeth and wide, thin lips.

clearly george had been looking at the girl for too long because, before he could look away, clay looked directly at him, and their eyes met.

they had been together long enough for the older boy to recognise the look of pain and regret flashing through the blonde's eyes.

he watched painfully as dream quickly flicked his vision away, smiling forcefully and wrapping his arms around the short girl.

it broke george's heart- seeing dream hold her. seeing the lengths that dream had gone to fill the gap in his heart that the brit had left. seeing the lengths the blonde had gone to replicate how it was to hold him.

the blonde's eyes faltered back towards the older boy, and george could've sworn he could see dream's mind reliving all their memories together.

but, despite this, clay smiled to his ex-lover, not a fake smile, a proper, genuine smile. one that made you feel like you were finally home again.

even though george knew dream was happy with someone else.

and even though george knew dream would never be his again.

he still felt a strange feeling of serenity.

a clean feeling.

like he could finally finish that chapter of his life.

like closure.

but that didn't stop george from looking at the girl in his arms one last time, and seeing how happy she was, seeing how happy he could've been, and thinking-

that should've been me.
