"What are you doing here?" I turned my head and glanced at my brother as he sauntered inside the lounge area, sucking on a rolled blunt.

He paused, glancing down at Scylla and Shadow. He smirked. I'd already had the black and gold dog collars I bought a few days ago harnessed around them without a struggle, and I would've been on my way out the door if it weren't for Eli. I was dressed in a white sports bra and some leggings with a baseball cap over my head to conceal my untamed hair that was thrown back into a bun.

I raised my eyebrows at Eli, waiting for him to answer.

He finally shook his head and laughed as he dropped down to sit on the few steps that led to the lounge. "Nico mentioned you were here alone, so I came to make sure you didn't decide to go off on another quest by yourself." He said. I didn't miss the jab in his voice.

"I'm not here alone anymore." I bent down and ran my hand down Shadow's muscular torso, giving him one final pat before straightening and looking over at Eli. "Spade got home a few minutes ago." He left me in the bed this morning to handle something with Nico and had said he'd be back before I woke up.

I was too out of it to question where he was going, but the minute I had gotten up and started my day, he was already walking back through the front door again, dodging any of my questions. Like who shot him.

My brain still couldn't fly past the fact that Spade was my masked criminal from the cinema.

Before him, I had never felt this much in my life, and I was completely scared. It terrified me— he terrified me, but somehow every doubt in my mind was drained whenever I was anywhere within a few feet of him because aside from everything else, If there was one thing that was absolute, it was my love for him.

I'd let myself fall for him.

And no one was there to catch me.

"Still, it's good to check on you." Eli leaned back on his elbows and smirked.

I smiled a little, sliding my phone inside my pocket. "I'm fine, Eli." It made me feel all warm inside that he cared. I knew that my brothers were good for my soul, but every day I was given more reasons to why that was true. "Are you?"

"Peachy." He said slowly, then narrowed his eyes at me. "Spade didn't tell yet, did he?"

I paused, my eyebrows furrowing. "Tell me...what?" My heart started pounding, and the hand I had wrapped around the dogs leashes suddenly felt sweaty and wet.

He blinked slowly. "Your brother's dead." His voice was deadpan. "The mute one?"

My head swarmed with questions, and my limbs started tingling with wariness. "Stefano?" I asked for further clarification, not sure I was hearing him right.

"Yeah. Volkov paid him and your stepmom to lure you away from us long enough for those Russian fucks to kidnap you. He was unsuccessful, so they had him killed. I found his body outside of a bar in the city." He said unapologetically, watching me carefully to catch my reaction.
