Holding Eddy's hand, we walk to Mama's house, one of the many new editions to the property since I came to Nicaragua to live for good. I've never been more happy in my life. Eddy and I decided on our own special house by the river, close to our little hideout place. A new school was built, and it looks way better than the one before. And, a lot more kids came to the orphanage, so something had to be done about the shortage of beds. So, with much pleading, Mama allowed me to build a "bigger house", with about 150 bedrooms with bathrooms, a huge kitchen for cooking, a play room for the kids, etc. The kids love it, and so do I.
Its Friday night, which means dancing. Scarlett beckons me to come, but as usual, I shake my head no. I'm proud of my girls, some of which have been accepted to colleges and universities in Canada and America. The same way I was able to face my fears and close the door to my past, they were able to do the same.
However, one of my biggest joys is in my arms. He's two years old, and has his dads hair, and my eyes. Shortly after Eddy and I tied the knot, I found out I was pregnant. Trust me, it was a big thing.
"How's Danny doing?" Eddy asks as he takes him out of my arms. "He's falling asleep." Placing a kiss on Eddy's cheek. "Actually, there's something I have to tell you."
From where I'm standing, Mama slowly starts to pack up the dishes. Of course, she's ease dropping.
"Go on."
"Our little family is going to expand..."
Eddy makes a face. "What do you mean?"
My God. Boys are so clueless. "Danny might have a little brother or sister..."
"You're pregnant?" Eddy smiles, kissing me.
I laugh. "I found out this morning."
Mama beams and starts telling the other volunteers.
Snaking his arm around my waist, Eddy steers me home. "You should be proud of yourself, Ana. You've changed a lot of people's hearts, for the better. You've captivated my heart, and you've blessed me with a wonderful family. You are an amazing mother, daughter, sister, friend and teacher. I love you, Anastasia."
"I love you too, Eddy."
As Eddy puts Danny in his crib, I pick up my writing journal that my mom gave to me. Opening it, I sigh realizing theres only one more page left. They were more than poems. They were my life story about pain, hurt and despair, and how I conquered all of that to find peace, hope and love. I know what I'm going to write on the first page. I pick up my pen.
