I hadn't seen anything that had happened since Reiner breached the wall in terms of the invasion. I'd been preoccupied. But from what I was told the scouts sprung into action leaving Eren to deal with Reiner.
I'd been forced to draw back my tears and head for HQ the building was fully ablaze by the time I reached it people spluttering and scouts running around frantically trying to get people and documents out of the building.
"How can I help?!" I asked Jean's girl, Amy, who was helping an injured soldier from the hospital towards the waiting transport cart.
"Help Hange with getting the research equipment. They're in there alone."
"On it!" I sprinted around the building pulling down my rolled up sleeves and entering through the back entrance. I was immediatley hit in the face with a wall of smoke.
"HANGE?!" I coughed. Not again. I couldn't do this again. Not today. I ran in through the door pulling off my cardigan to wrap over my mouth and nose to protect my airways.
I took a hesitant breath. The smoke burned my lungs but worse was the metallic taste that lingered on my lips. I gagged. Ripping it off my mouth and staring down at it as I continued to try to find my way through the persistent fog and sound of crackling flames. My beige cardigan was married with red. My heart twinged.
For a moment I thought about everything I'd witnessed just an hour prior. Tears welled in my eyes although I wasn't sure if it was from the choking air or my own emotions. I swallowed it down.
"HANGE?!" I called again but still with no response.
I coughed violently, the metallic taste coming from within this time. My forehead glazed with sweat from the heat that seemed to rise with every new step.
"Is someone there?! Please help us!" A voice came from somewhere around me.
I paused.
"Hello?!"
"Over here! Quickly!"A door to my left sprung open and I hurried inside and it was instantly closed behind me once again.
A cadet knelt beside me pushing his jacket back against the crack under the door to stop the smoke.
The room was bare. Seemed to have been undergoing renovations of some kind that hadn't been completed.
To the side of the room Nanaba sat propped up against a wall.
"Shit! Nanaba! Are you okay?" I rushed to her side.
"Yeah I'm good just hurt my ankle trying to kick down the door to Hange's lab. Then us two got stuck in here." She motioned to the cadet. "Well three...." She looked down to her stomach touching it lightly before coughing hard.
"Oh god. We have to get you out of here."
"The smoke out there is too thick. There's no way we'd make it if we go back into the corridor." Nanaba shook her head in defeat
"The window it is then." I walked to the window trying to pull it open but finding it locked.
"Are you crazy? We're on the second floor we'll fall to our deaths." The cadet furrowed his brows at me.
"Lucky for you. I'm good at abseiling then isn't it." I said in a slightly passive aggresive tone. Irked that he hadnt tried to get them out sooner, worried at the damage the smoke may have done to the baby. I grabbed a chair and thrust it towards the window.
The glass held firm. I hit the window again. No success.
If a chair wouldnt do it then brute force would have to do. Usually i would have tried to kick the window out but with my ankle still in pain there was no chance of me havjng the power to do so. I planted my feet and wound back my dominant hand.
"Here goes nothing."

Amy helped the injured scout to the waiting cart before rushing back to the medical tent.
"How is he?" She asked one of the senior nurses as she gently stroked a wisp of muddied hair from Jean's forehead.
"He's stable, for now. But hes not stable enough to be moved. He'll have to stay here with the other crticals." The nurse responded.
"B-but theyre gonna head this way next! And what if he wakes up in the mean time. I have to be here." She pleaded
"Well, unless youve got some special orders from the commander we dont know about, you havent got a choice. Now get going with the others. We'll look after him don't worry." The nurse brushed Amy off.
"Please im begging. I dont want him to be alone." She tried to appeal to the nurses sensitive side but it clearly didnt work
"Go. Now." She said sternly.
Amy clasped Jean's hand tightly brushing over the coloured strings around his wrist before reluctantly letting go and returning towards the cart with the injured scouts aboard.
A crashing sound came from the burning building as a window was punched out and Amy looked up to see y/n leankng backwards out a second floor window a dust sheet wrapped aroind her waist. She began to lower herself to the ground.
"I NEED MEDICS!" Y/n called out towards Amy and she rushed to help.
"Okay, Nanaba. I'm your counterweight so lower yourself slowly and ill start to rise upwards so you dont fall too fast." Y/n called up to Nanaba who had appeared in the shattered window
"Alright. Got it." Nanaba tied herself to the other end of the make shift rope and began her decent.
They repeated the process with the cadet and with y/n ending her counter-weighting back at the window she untied herself and vanished back inside.
