"Mom, are you okay?"
I asked her as she turned on the car.
Giving me a faint smile she nodded, her breathing a bit shallow.
I gave her a worried glance at her as she drove. She didn't seem okay...
She seemed to be a bit uneasy and tired. I looked at as her breath started to come out in gasps. Was she having a panic attack? No, it couldn't be...
"Mom, MOM! Turn to the hospital," I told her as her breathing began to get worse.
"No sweetie I'll be fine, it's probably nothing," she brushed off, her eyes fixed on the road.
"MOM! Turn to the hospital NOW!" I said, my tone firm.
What was going on? What was happening? She seemed fine a few minutes ago.
I gave her my most intensifying glare that probably would have gotten me grounded in a normal situation. But this wasn't normal. She finally gave in, turning the car around to drive towards the hospital.
As soon as she stopped the car, I jumped out, hurrying towards the emergency unit. Mom was starting to choke on her breath.
"Quick, I need a doctor. Now!" I literally shouted at the face of the nurse.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"It's my mom, something's wrong. She can't breathe. I need help NOW!" I demanded.
The nurse and I hurried towards the car. Mom was resting her head against the seat of the car, clawing at her neck. I felt uneasy as panic flowed into my system. The nurse placed two fingers on mom's neck, checking her pulse.
"I need a stretcher and an Ambu bag, Now!" She shouted out to the nurses behind her.
They immediately brought a stretcher and got my mom to rest on it.
As soon as we entered through the door a nurse came in front of me.
"Miss, could we please have the patient's name and details please," she asked.
"But my mom! I need to see her!" I tried to push past the nurse.
"Your mother is in good hands, Miss, the doctors are doing everything they can. Can I please have the patient's name please?"
"Clarissa Sirenville."
"Age?"
"Forty-Seven."
"Okay is there any one else we might be able to call, like your father or a relative,"
"Um.. I can try calling my best friend's mom? My dad's out of town and our other family members aren't in this country," I replied.
"Okay, could you please give us her phone number?" She asked.
I gave the nurse, Lana's Mom's phone number and went to sit on one of the chairs as I waited. I put my head on my hands, keeping my elbows on my knees. What was I going to do? What was going on? I felt as if my whole life was falling apart.
First the dreams then Arav and now this!
...
I wiped my tears for what felt like the hundredth time.
It was almost nightfall. Mom's condition seemed to be getting worse over time and I wasn't allowed to see her either. All I could do was wait.
Lana was next to me as she tried to comfort me.
Lana's mom, principal Melissa, walked up to me.
"The doctors still haven't been able to find out what might have caused this. They suspect it is some kind of virus, for now no one is allowed to visit her in case it spreads," she replied.
