Kai

Kai spent most of the next few days studying and taking tests. He had talked to Jerry the day before about the dogs. Jerry was going to extend their deadline by about six months, citing a potential adoption. That would certainly help Sara feel like she had more time to find them a home.

Closing on the house felt a bit anti-climactic. He was paying for the home in cash and didn't have as many papers to sign if he was doing a mortgage instead. He technically didn't have full access to his trust fund for another year, however it did allow for early withdrawals for things like housing and medical care. Once he turned 18 he also received a monthly stipend of $8,000, plenty for them to live on comfortably even if he never got a job. He could live on the amount in his trust until he was in his 90s.

Sara would never need to work; however, he fully supported her decision in having a career. He knew she would be great at helping kids and adults get through their trials. She was perfect for it. Her ability to understand and help others is one thing he loves most about her.

Jerry was supposed to break the news to Sara today about the dogs' extension and he was anxiously waiting for her to send him a text telling him the good news. Nothing ever came.

He didn't see Sara until he got home that afternoon. Finals for the day complete. They had planned to eat in and work on rehearsing their presentation.

After walking through the door, he found her aimlessly scrolling through tv channels again. He frowned. She'd been doing that a lot the past few days. Her hair was up in a messy bun, and she wore sweats and a long-sleeved shirt. Not that it really mattered, she looked amazing in anything. However, he was starting to become concerned for her and wondered if the stress from finals was catching up to her. After this they only had one semester left before they were done with school.

"How were finals today?" He asked, coming to sit next to her on the couch. Placing his arm around her he pulled her into his side.

"Oh, fine." She said breathlessly. "I do have some good news though" she turned and looked at him. His heart about melted seeing some of the spark return to her eyes.

"Oh?" he questioned.

"Bruno and Ashby have a potential adopter that can't make it out until January to pick them up. So, their stay has been extended for another six months!" She smiled; it was so contagious that he smiled back at her. "Can you believe it?"

Yes, he could. "That's amazing! I knew they would find something!" he pulled her in tight and kissed her smiling lips.

"What should we have for dinner tonight? We need to work on the presentation. I'd even love it if we could include the good news about the dogs somewhere in the presentation."

"I already ordered. I think some greasy sandwiches and fries from The Philly, are in order. It should be here in a few minutes.

"I'm going to go change, I feel a bit over dressed for dinner tonight" he teasingly said while getting up.

The doorbell rang while he was pulling a shirt on, and he ran out to grab it before Sara could.

Too late.

"What are you doing here?" he heard her say.

"I could ask you the same question." An accusatory, high-pitched voice returned. Kai froze before he turned the corner.

He agreed with Sara. Why is she here?

Finding his feet, he finally stepped out from the corner and went to the front door. Sara was not letting the uninvited guest in. Good.
