Sara

Her cheek still hurt in the morning. It was a little redder on the side she was hit than on the other, she could easily hide it with a little bit of foundation. She hated wearing makeup but decided she could use the presentation as a cop-out for why she was wearing some. She didn't sleep much, and the makeup would help hide the bags under her eyes.

Kai had called her that morning to see if she could swing by his condo to grab the printed report. He had forgotten it that morning in his rush out the door.

Kyle's assault yesterday still weighed heavily on her mind as she walked into the condo. That, coupled with the stunt that Chelsea had pulled earlier, made her leery whenever she was truly alone.

Kai said he left it on his desk, so Sara headed towards his bedroom. No one was supposed to be home, Kai was at work and AJ had finals, yet she heard sound coming from Kai's bedroom as she walked down the hallway.

She stepped closer and put her ear to the door. She could hear a female moaning and what sounded like the bed squeaking as it moved around.

Her hands suddenly felt cold and clammy. It couldn't be. She shook her head as tears welled in her eyes. Kai wouldn't do this to me she told herself. But then why was there another woman in his room?

Standing up tall she put on a brave face as she quietly opened the door to peek in. What she saw horrified her and she gasped. There on the bed, on all fours was Chelsea, completely naked, while a man stood behind her pounding into her. She couldn't see much of the man since his back was turned to her. It looked like-

"Kai!" Chelsea moaned as she orgasmed. Kai started to move faster.

"I can't wait until we are married, and I get to fuck you every. Single. Day." The voice was husky and didn't quite sound like Kai's but given that he was spilling his load deep into Chelsea...

Tears fell as she sobbed.

Chelsea looked over at her, just now noticing that they had an audience. "Oh, hey Sara." She cooed. Kai stiffened but didn't turn around. "I hope you had a good show?" Chelsea giggled. She stood up and walked over to her. She didn't even bother with putting a blanket around her. She twirled her bleach blonde hair in her fingers as she put one hand on her hip. Triumph in her eyes.

"I told you he was mine. You were just a plaything to fill in for me while he was away. But don't you worry your pretty little head about it. I don't mind sharing. In fact, when he and I are married, we'd love to have some fun with you. If you want..." Her voice trailed off as she gave a vicious smirk.

Sara's heart shattered. She tilted her head to look at Kai. His back was still to her, and he hadn't moved to look at her. "Kai?" Sara asked, "What's going on?"

He still didn't turn around. His voice was gruff. "You were sex. That's all"

Sara couldn't believe it. After everything he told her. It as a lie. After everything they've gone through. He just tossed it to the side. Sara was a toy. A filler. Worthless.

She stepped back into the hallway. Chelsea turned around and headed over to the desk and grabbed their report, then walked back over to Sara and handed it to her.

"Bye Sara, Kai and I need another round so he's nice and relaxed for your presentation later." She winked, and with that, Chelsea shut the door. Sara heard a click as the door was locked then heard laughing and giggling coming from inside the room.

Sara turned and ran. Ran from the house and to her car. She couldn't stop the tears from coming. Her heart broke more with every step, every foot, every mile as she drove away.

She knew she couldn't face going to school or back to her apartment. Sara ignored Jerry when he saw the turmoil on her face as she quickly walked back to the kennels. He followed her as she took Bruno out of his kennel and out to the play yard.

"Sara?" Jerry called out to her. "What's wrong?" She didn't respond, just kept walking. Hopefully Jerry wouldn't press too hard, she couldn't talk to anyone right now.

She supposed Jerry could sense her unwillingness to speak. "I'll be inside, if you want to talk, Sara"

Once he had left, Sara let Bruno off his leash and let him run around as she sobbed. She cried like there was no tomorrow. Her future - their future – had been cast aside like it was nothing. Had he really meant anything he had told her? Or was it all a ruse to get inside her pants? Was this his surprise?

Kai had used her, much in the same way that Kyle had, yet this, this felt worse. If this is how it felt to have your heart ripped out by someone you loved, then Sara wanted no part in it ever again. She painstakingly rebuilt those walls around her heart.

Bruno came over a few times and would sit by her, lick her salty tears before trotting away after a bird. Tears still streamed from her face. Bile came up her throat and she vomited her breakfast. She didn't even notice or seem to care when Bruno came back over and cleaned it up. She just stared out the yard and towards the mountains. Bruno came and laid next to her, keeping her company his head rested in her lap.

Minutes, days, weeks, Sara didn't know how long she sat there on the frozen ground. She couldn't even feel the cold as it wrapped its tendrils around her as the sky slowly started to turn dark. She could hear her phone ringing and pinging with messages. She ignored them all.

At some point while she sat there, Jerry had come out and brought Bruno back inside and put a blanket around her. He had said something to her before he walked away, but his words didn't register. She just stared.

She was numb. Both physically and emotionally. Her world had crumbled and there was no way to pick up the pieces.

Someone stood before her as she sat in the dark. The figure knelt down and looked her in the face. AJ's kind face stared at her. Worry etched across his features.

"Sara?" he said, quietly. It was almost a whisper, but she didn't respond. She couldn't. A lump was permanently lodged in her throat.

She felt his arms as he lifted her up. He carried her back inside, her head resting on his shoulder. Sara couldn't feel the warmth that filled the shelter. All she felt was cold.

AJ took her to the breakroom and set her down on the couch that sat against a wall. Jerry was there with more blankets and a hot drink. Jerry put the blankets over her. Her fingers warmed up as she held the cup, but she didn't drink any.

"Sara," AJ said, "What's going on? What happened? Casey and Kai have been trying to reach you all day. No one knew where you were until Jerry called me."

She looked up into their faces. She could see their concern. Jerry leaned against the breakroom table and AJ sat in a chair next to her.

"I-" She started but the lump rose in her throat and tears filled her eyes. She took a breath and tried again. "Kai broke up with me. H-He wants to m-marry Chelsea. I was just his fill in while he was here."

AJ growled and his jaw tightened, and she saw his fists clench.

"He didn't say anything to me about that. You deserve better Sara. Any man who would leave you for that fancy-nasally voiced-blonde, is out of his mind. I'm sorry." He placed his hand on her knee. A gesture meant to be comforting.

Minutes passed by in silence before AJ suggested that he take her home. She agreed. Before they left she asked Jerry if Bruno was ok.

"He's fine. Take a few days okay?" he gave a small smile.
