Chapter 37

Kai

Pacing around the hallway, Kai waited for Sara. She was late. She was never late to class. Neither was she answering her phone. He checked in with William, Sara's non-descript bodyguard, to see if he had eyes on her.

"She swung by your place about 45 minutes ago, then left a few minutes later." William said, "I lost her after that because of a train."

Kai pinched the bridge of his nose as he continued to pace, "Find her, check her apartment the shelter, anywhere you think she may be."

Kai tried Sara again, still no answer. He called Casey who hadn't seen her either. Looking down at his watch and then to the classroom door, he called Sara one last time before heading into class.

There was still no sign of Sara when it came time for him to present on their project. He gave the presentation as best as he could and hoped Sara would get there sometime during it. That wasn't the case either.

He swung by Professor Larsen's desk before leaving to apologize for her absence.

"I don't know where Sara is, Professor and she's not answering her phone. She was supposed to swing by my place to pick up the report, then she disappeared. I'm sorry she missed the presentation and that we have no written report to turn in. I will email you a copy of it now so that you have it. I'll find out what happened and maybe there is a way for us to salvage her final?"

"Kai," Professor Larsen started, "she's never even missed a class before. Something must have happened. Let's find out and I'll let you both repeat the presentation to me if I feel it's necessary." She patted him on the shoulder as she stood up to leave, "You did good, and I know Dusty Paws appreciated your help"

Kai had checked his phone a million times during class and still there was nothing from Sara. He called Casey, William, and even AJ, as soon as he left the classroom to see if any of them had heard from her.

Nothing.

His heart started to race as worry filled him. Could she have been in an accident? No, Casey was listed as her emergency contact and if she was in an accident Casey would be one of the first to know.

Dialing her number again, it rang until voicemail picked up.

"Sara? Where are you? What's wrong? Please call me back. I'm worried sick and no one has heard from you. I love you"

He got in his truck to start driving around, he was going to start at his condo and make his way out from there, make sure her normal route to school didn't have a car accident on it. Which it didn't.

It was dark outside now, making it hard to see anything as he continued to drive, searching any of the places he thought she would go.

The phone rang and Kai picked it up with his hands free, "Have you found her?"

"Yes," William said.

Kai breathed a sigh of relief. "Where?"

"She was at the animal shelter. AJ is with her now and it looks like he's taking her to his car."

"Ok, I'll call him and find out what's going on. Thanks William. Keep tailing them."

"Yes, sir"

Why was she at the animal shelter? Did something happen with Bruno or Ashby?

He rang AJ, who didn't pick up. He called Casey instead.

"What the hell Kai?" Casey screamed at him as she answered. He was taken aback by her greeting, but at least she answered. "What is wrong with you?"
