so. Mystics.

the basic backstory for how the species came to be is that they were spontaneous creations by the 12 Elemental Deities; the species received one gift from each Deity before the first Mystics roamed the Earth.

after facing a lot of discrimination and even being hunted for their hearts and magic, Mystics eventually evolved to look more like legitimate humans in order to avoid death; formerly, they resembled humans but had unnatural eyes and patterns on their face or hands, which gave them away.

Mystics that were born with full animal appearances were often shunned, or killed off - so it's incredibly rare to see one even today.

evidently, many years have passed since Mystics had to evolve to survive. over the years, slowly, Mystics have been gaining new and more helpful appearances due to the fact that they have no need to blend in anymore.

now this is all completely useless information to you, the reader, but I wanted to infodump and also needed something to introduce the characters-

so, I present to you, the newest generation of Mystics!! well, some of them, at least-

Rini "Amami" Kouda

age
13

height
5'10"

animal
Amami rabbit

element
dark + water

persona
Rini is a very paranoid girl who's trying her best to be positive, despite her anxiety and...various issues. she's very sharp-witted, but overly defensive, and prone to panicking and forgetting everything she's ever learned in moments of stress. she's also incredibly emotional and can burst into tears at a moments' notice, which has been demonstrated thousands of times.

background
Rini's mother abandoned her in a moment of uncertainty and stress shortly after giving birth, leaving the newborn with her young father.
her father essentially co-parented Rini alongside his siblings and a few close friends in a tiny apartment. she had a good upbringing thanks to her father's stubborn determination to make his daughter as happy as possible, and the fact she was homeschooled - so as to avoid bullies and other such drama.
at age 8, she suffered a spinal injury while playing at a park with older, bigger kids who didn't know their strength, causing paralysis of the legs. shortly after somewhat-recovering from the injury, the two families of the children who accidentally hurt her covered all medical costs, even when her father and even Rini herself tried to insist that they didn't have to.
at age 9, her father suffered a heart attack and passed away a week later. since his siblings and friends all had a lot on their plates/couldn't take care of her one way or another, and didn't want to send the grieving girl into the foster system, they sent her to America for school with one of her father's friends.
she currently attends a private all-girls school alongside her friends, and is adjusting somewhat well to the new environment.
