CHAPTER 23: GRAVITY
MIREIA'S POV
I was jolted from my sleep, when the warmest pillow on the planet that I was hugging suddenly moved. Wait... what? Pupungas-pungas na iminulat ko ang mga mata ko. I'm on Axel's huge bed, and the pillow that was usually between us was at the feet of the bed. Mukhang siya ang ginawa kong unan kanina.
"Axel?"
My eyes adjusted from the dark and I could see that he's pulling up his pants on. The sweatpants he usually wears to sleep is on the floor. Ganoon din ang sando niya.
"Saan ka pupunta?" Tumingin ako sa bedside table kung saan naroon ang digital clock niya. "It's four o'clock in the morning."
"I need to go."
"This early?"
"I need to go to the hospital right now."
Napaupo ako at inabot ko ang switch ng lamp na malapit sa akin. Nang bumaha ang liwanag sa kuwarto ay sinuri ko ang kabuuan niya. "Are you okay?"
"I am."
"Then why? It's four in the—"
"I know what time it is."
I was taken aback for a moment. Axel doesn't snap at anyone. He's always been patient, specially with me. The sting I felt from the way he answered lasted just for a second. If I didn't know him better, I would have stepped back.
Tumayo ako at lumapit ako sa kaniya. I reached for his hand and tugged on it so that he would face me. When our eyes met, I saw worry in his eyes; not anger, or annoyance.
"If you need to leave, that's okay. Would someone be here to look after me while you're away, or is that not needed? Okay lang naman akong maiwan. Nandito naman sila Naynay. If you want to drop me at Dagger that would be fine too."
"Damn it," he cursed under his breath. "I'm sorry, I forgot. I'll call—"
"Why don't you tell me where you're rushing to first?" Marahang hinaplos ko ang braso niya. I felt his body relaxed under my touch. "Is everyone okay?"
It's not like their job is one hundred percent safe. They put themselves out there for their job, and because they handle well-known people, they are also being exposed to whatever problems that are following their clients.
"I'm sorry."
My forehead knotted with his words, but my hand continued rubbing his arm. "What for?"
"I snapped at you. It wasn't your fault, and I... I was just... I—"
"It's fine, Axel."
Marahas na huminga siya ng malalim. "Kuya Thorn called. Dinala nila sa ospital si Lush."
