*EJ POV*
It's been a few days since I broke my leg from surfing. It kinda ruined the rest of my season for water polo: my last season because it's senior year for me. It's just so annoying. It's fine, though. I should be leaving the hospital in a few days, which is good, but I'm out for the rest of the season. Let's hope I can lean on theater or school for a scholarship because water polo is out. I've been moody recently because this is just a stupid thing to happen. Today, I was watching YouTube as the doctors pulled the curtain separating my room from another. Maybe I'll finally have a roommate. They rolled a girl in with a bandage on her head. Ah, hopefully, she's okay. They gave her an IV and some medicine, and she rested for the rest of the day. She had an injury to her eye and her head, but she was still really cute. Probably the same age as me. I got into my wheelchair from my bed (it was a struggle) and rolled over to the curtain. I pulled it open. She was watching Ms. Marvel on Disney+ (not a sponsorship i swear). She looked up at me and grinned, "uh-hi?"
"Hey!" I grinned, "I'm EJ."
"Y/N."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too." She giggled a little, "Uhm-anything else?"
"Um-not right now. I was just excited to get a roommate. Do you mind if we keep this curtain open? Maybe we can watch something together, sometime?"
"Are you hitting on a girl with a concussion?"
"I mean-yeah."
She laughed, "I like your honesty, EJ. How old are you?"
"18." I smiled.
"Aw, you're just a baby."
"And how old are you?"
"20."
"Ooh, a college girl."
She laughed, "What happened to your leg?"
"What happened to your head?" I retorted.
"A van ran into my car."
"Nice. A big wave snapped my tibia."
"The thick one. Dang, that's rough."
"You going to be a doctor?"
"I'm going to school for medicine."
"Cool, cool."
"Are you still in high school?"
"Yep, I'm a senior."
"That's so weird, being that young."
"It must be weird being that old. When were you born, like 2002?"
She laughed, "Yup, are you a 2004 baby?"
"That's me." I laughed.
"Maybe we can watch something."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
"How about High School Musical?" I smiled.
"Do you go to East High?"
"Yeah." I laughed.
"I went to North High."
"Ah, my school has harsh feelings about yours."
"Same."
"A forbidden romance, I like it." I grinned.
"Romance? Maybe, we could wait until you graduate." She laughed as I turned on High School Musical. "This movie sucks."
"You suck," I responded.

A few days I got released from the hospital.
"I'm actually going to miss you, Y/N," I said, giving her a hug.
"You're so sweet, EJ! I won't miss you." She laughed, "I'm just kidding, you've been a great roommate."
"Well, thank you. How long do you have to stay here?"
"I don't know, probably like 1 more week or something."
"Okay, well, I hope to see you again," I said, walking out of our room.
"See ya." I smiled.
-
I went back to the hospital every day for a week and gave Y/N flowers. I think I might be growing on her. The next week I went to her room again to give her new flowers, and I didn't see her there.
"Y/N?"
A nurse walked in, "Oh, honey. She's gone."
"What??" I sat down on her bed. She can't. She was only- "She died???"
"Oh, no!! Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to imply that. She went home."
"Oh. Phew. Oh my gosh." I was so relieved that Y/N was okay, but also sad. When will I ever see her again? I never even got her number.

That next fall
I was so excited, today was my first day at Utah University. I am majoring in theater. Maybe it was a happy accident that I hurt myself. I got to do what I really love.
I heard a knock on my dorm room door and as I opened it, I saw a familiar face. She was looking down at a paper as she started, "Hi! I'm your mentor for this year. I'll be a junior this year, and Utah University assigns juniors to help mentor freshmen. You can ask me any questions, and I can help find your-"
She finally looked up to see me and grinned. My face got close to her's and before I knew it we were kissing, "EJ!" She exclaimed.
"What?" I shrugged, "I graduated."
"I missed you so much." She said, giving me a hug.
"Oh my gosh, me too, Y/N. But, you go to University of Utah? We go to the same school!"
"Duh." She grinned, kissing my cheek. "You know what, I'm really glad I got that concussion."
"I'm glad I broke my-"
"Tibia." She finished, smiling.
"Yeah, the thick one." I laughed.
