1941
I was standing in an awfully simple white dress, staring into the love of my life's gorgeous blue eyes. His smile was almost up to his ear and I'm sure mine was too.

"Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, do you take Ms. Emily Kendall Palmer to be your wedded wife, from this day forward? To pledge before God, honor, love, and cherish her until death do you part?" the priest asked

"I do" Bucky replied

"Ms. Emily Kendall Palmer, do you take Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes to be your wedded husband, from this day forward? To pledge before God, honor, love, and cherish him until death do you part?" the pastor asked me

"I do" I answered

"It is, therefore, my joy and privilege to declare you husband and wife. Sergeant, you may kiss your bride. And may God bless this union. Amen" he said.

Bucky pulled me close, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissed me. The few people that we had brought in the church with us started clapping.

And when I say few I mean my parents, my best friend/Bucky's sister/my maid of honor, Bucky's parents and his best friend, Steve/his best man.

We were smiling as we pulled away from each other "I love you" Bucky whispered

"I love you too" I replied and I kissed him one more time.

A few hours later, we were back home. We didn't get much sleep that night but it was totally worth it. Because, the following day was going to be our last day together for a while; Bucky was leaving for the war.

As planned, we spent most of the day at his parents' house and, at night, we went out at the Stark Expo for a last date. Bucky always wanted to go there so I had surprised him with the tickets that morning.

"I could marry you again right now" he said as we walked around the Expo

"But maybe not in the same conditions" I suggested.

"Emmy, marry me" he had said out of nowhere two nights ago while I was brushing my teeth.

"Come on, it was great. And you're my wife, so mission accomplished" he explained as he wraped his arms around me

"I guess you're right, husband" I replied and he smiled even more.

"Buck!" we heard and I rolled my eyes a bit.

"Steve!" Bucky replied and let go of me.

"I'll take a walk around and let you talk. I'll meet you back here" I said to Bucky and I kissed him before walking away.

It's not that I didn't like Steve, he was a good guy and I understood his and Bucky's bond but he could have been a little less of a... bug. He could have at least stopped interrupting our dates. I mean, he had already done it, like, 10-12 times in the span of the year and a half Bucky and I were together.

That moment everyone started clapping and I saw Howard Stark walk on the stage. I stood there to listen to his presentation to pass the time.

However, that was not the first time I met Mr. Stark. I had studied biology and I was working on a project about cryonic preservation and the benefits it could have in medicine. Earlier that year, Mr. Stark had offered me a position in his lab so I could work in a better equipped environment.

After accepting, I had only been sending him reports with updates on my projects. This was actually the third time in total that I had seen him.

That night, he was presenting the first flying car. But I had been hearing rumors in the lab that he has been working on much bigger things.

"Hi, love" I heared Bucky's voice and felt his hand on my waist

"Hi" I replied and I relaxed in his embrace.

At various points during the presentation, it felt like Mr. Stark and I preserved eye contact for several seconds, but I was convinced that I was just reaching.

By the end of it, it was time for the final goodbye. Bucky was leaving tonight so he could make it to his base by the morning.

"So..." he said as he turned towards me

"I love you" I said as tears formed in my eyes

"I love you too, Emmy. And don't cry because I will cry too" he kissed my lips.
"I'll come back to you" he promised

"You better" I chuckled
"I'm too young to be a widow and black is not my color" I added in my attempt to lighten the mood

"No, you're beautiful in anything. And nothing..." he whispered the last part as he looked at my chest.

"Bucky!"

"Sorry. Will you be ok alone?" he asked rubbing my cheek

"I won't be alone. Becca is basically ready to move in with me"

"Why?" he asked almost scared

"She's my best friend" I answered

"And also my sister. So don't let her touch my things, she is always breaking it" he said causing me to laugh

"I'm sure that was true while you were kids. And she's been my friend longer than I've been with you" I reminded him

"Of course, I was her annoying big brother"

"And look at you now..." I kissed him.

"We'll see each other again" he said

"Yes, we will".

He started taking a couple of steps back but I wouldn't let go of his hand.

"I love you more than anything" he said one more time

"How am I supposed to not cry when you say that?" I asked as I wiped the tear that almost left my eye.

He smiled and kissed me one more time. We let you of our holding hands.

"Be careful"

"Always" he smiled.

He turned and waved at me as he walked away. Soon, he disappeared in the crowd and I took a deep breath. I looked up as I tried to blink away my tears.

'It's fine. Many people do this. He's going to be fine. Please God, bring him back to me safely' I told myself.

"Ok..." I whispered to myself and started to walk towards the other exit.

"Ms. Palmer?" someone called. It was a man around his 30's. "Would you care to follow me for a minute? Mr. Stark would like to have a word with you" he explained

"With me?" I asked surprised

"Yes, please, he said that it won't take long" he added

"Alright" I answered and followed him to the rooms in the back.

"Mr. Stark, Ms. Palmer is here" he announced as he let me in the room

"Thank you Jarvis. You can go" Mr. Stark said and the man left us alone.
"Ms. Palmer!" he turned towards me

"It's actually Mrs. Barnes now" I corrected him nicely

"My apologies, and congratulations"

"Thank you".

"How is your project going?" he wondered

"It's making progress" I answered

"You've made quite the progress since your tranfer, I'm impressed. I've read all your reports and I have an offer for you to expand your research. Even start experimenting people" he suggested

"No, I don't think it's ready yet to be tested on humans" I answered surprised by his offer

"Let's say that they won't be normal people. They'll be stronger and you'll have every information you need on them when you start. I want to take your research to the next level. What do you say?"

"I'm in".
