I burst in the command floor, knocking every security guard out of my way. My anger grows when I see Steve sitting there and chatting with Tony Stark.
"Where is he?!" I yell
"Emily, calm dow--"
"Where is Bucky?!" my eyes light up due to anger.
"Calm down, lady" Stark says this time
"Where. Is. He.?" I insist, threatening to stab him with an icicle
Stark rolls his eyes and taps on his watch. A glove forms around his hand, similar to his Ironman suit, as he stands between me and Steve.
"Enough, Elsa. Let it go" he says
"You can't hurt me" I chuckle
"I think I can".
The palm of his glove glows but I freeze it before he can shoot.
He groans "I should have seen this coming. What are you?"
"Ask your daddy" I answer, walking passed him to get to Steve.
"One more chance, where is B--" someone turns on a screen behind Steve.
There is Bucky, inside a box, chained down on a chair. So many locks and metals to make sure he is captured. My heart sinks and my eyes fill with tears.
"These are just precautions. A doctor is in there with him to evaluate his... condition" Steve explains
"He didn't cause that explosion. We were together all morning. He doesn't kill people" I say, fighting the sob
"I know" he replies.
I nod and I look away for a moment to blink my tears away. I cross my arms in front of my chest and I force my attention back to the screen.
"I don't want to talk about it" Bucky replies to something
"Don't worry. We only have to talk about one thing" the doctor says.
On the next beat the power goes out and all the screens turn black. Everyone starts panicking but I turn to Steve. His attention is on the blondie who turned on the screen earlier.
"Sublevel 5, east wing" she says, and we're off.
The first thing we see there is a trail of bodies. "No, no, no... Bucky!" I call, hoping he didn't do this
"Help..." the doctor groans from inside one of the rooms.
Steve heads there while I keep looking for evidence of Bucky on the rest of the floor.
"Who are you? What do you want?" I hear Steve's angry voice.
Before I could hear the response, a silver fist comes towards me. I avoid it on the last second and he ends up hitting and breaking the wall behind me.
"Buck--" before I can even finish, he tries to punch me again.
I use my powers and I throw him at the other side of the room. I pin his metal arm on the wall with ice to gain some time. Just one look at him, and it's clear that the monster is back.
"I don't know what happened here, but you're in there Bucky! You hear me? Wake up, Bucky!" I yell almost like a command.
But it only makes him angrier. He breaks the ice and frees himself. He comes on me again. So I fight him while doing my best not to hurt him.
I get cornered quickly. He grabs me by the throat and lifts me from the ground. He is squeezing my neck so much that I think he's an inch from breaking it. And while I am choking, he's looking me in the eyes. Nothing.
All my nightmares are back in a heartbeat. He's killing me in a hundred different ways. And the only consistent thing is that I always die in the end.
Steve hits him from behind, causing him to let go of me. I drop on the floor, coughing and breathing heavily. The two of them continue to fight. I crawl away from them, ignoring the bodies on the floor, and I hide behind a desk. I bring my legs to my chest and I cover my mouth to prevent myself from making more noise.
Tears are streaming down my cheeks. My chest feels heavy. I can't seem to be able to catch my breath. My whole body is shaking.
He's still in there. He was always in there. The Winter Soldier has been living by my side all this time along with Bucky. He can still take control. Even now, without HYDRA, he got out. He's never going to be completely free. We never going to be completely free. I'm never going to be safe from him. He still has instructions to kill me.
"Emily!" Steve's loud voice snaps me back to reality
"W-- Where is he?" I ask still shaking
"He's running away. Are you ok?"
"I-- I am" I lie.
He doesn't look convinced but also doesn't push further. "Take this. Go to this address. I'll take Bucky and I'll meet you there" he says handing me a small paper
"How are you going to get him back?" I ask
"Let me figure that out. You be there" he says.
"Did you know he could still... do this?" I ask
"I wasn't sure" he answers.
I nod and he leaves. I wipe my tears and I take a few deep breaths. Maybe third time is the charm.
I gather whatever energy I have left and I leave SHIELD's facilities. I head to the address Steve gave me.
It is an abandoned building in the middle of nowhere. And despite my small detour to grab some liquid courage for myself, I am the first one there. So I sit down and I open the first bottle of cheap scotch.
~
Some time later, I hear voices approaching. I get up from the ground, I hide the alcohol and I try to look put together. Steve and Sam are carrying unconscious Bucky inside. Or however this is.
They put him down and restrict his arm. The pain in my chest grows again. I try to swallow the knot in my throat unsuccessfully.
"Is he...?" I speak
"We don't know" Steve replies.
They both walk away from him once he's secure. "Do we think he'll remember what he did?" I wonder
"Not sure. We also don't know how much he'll remember of us when he wakes up" he adds
"Of course...".
If he doesn't remember, everything might have been for nothing. All this last year was for nothing.
I grab my half empty bottle and I leave the room without saying another word.
