Chapter 35

Emily's POV
All I hear is a buzzing sound. I can't make out where it's coming from. It might be just in my ears. I want to touch my head, but my limbs don't follow my brain's orders. It hurts. Everything hurts and feels too heavy.

The buzzing slowly starts turning into reverb sounds. A voice... But it's still too deep, I can't make out a single word yet. I catch random sounds. Sometimes they make sense, but mostly they don't.

Slowly, more words start making sense.

"... did it... asking...".

The voice gets clearer.

Bucky?

I still can't move. Not even groan.

"...Overall, we're managing. Of course, I haven't told her what really happened. I don't want to upset her. I told her that you are working away from home and can't call. She thinks that you're a spy and she is excited about it" he chuckles by the end.

He's talking about JJ. I think he is sitting on my left. I relax and I listen to his voice.

"But she is keeping it a secret. She said she is good at it, which has me worried now" he admits.

"She misses you, doll. We both do. I really wish you are here. I really wish you are listening actually. Because if you aren't, I'll feel bad about talking to no one these last couple of days".

He pauses and takes a breath. I manage to make fingers of my left hand twitch. That's the best I can do for now. And I hear him jump from his seat.

"Emmy..." he almost sobs as he takes my hand and kisses my head. "You're here...".

"Buck..." I breathe out as I open my eyes

"Yes, doll. I'm here. And I'm sorry" he takes my hand and kisses it. "It's over, I promise. I'm not going anywhere. Our family is the only thing I care about. I am all in. I will do whatever you want and need me to do from now on. I'm so so sorry"

"Took you long enough" I comment

"Yes, it did. I am so sorry"

"I believe you. Just don't betray my trust again"

"Never" he replies immediately.

I take a good look at him. His ocean blue eyes are red all around, and his black circles confirm my suspicions.

"You look like crap" I chuckle, but my voice is so raspy

"I know, I haven't been sleeping much lately" he admits.

"How bad?"

"No, it's... Shuri did miracles. You'll just have to get used to walking again for some time" he answers

"I guess that's better than no walking"

"It is. And I'll be with you for every step" he kisses my hand again. "I love you so much"

"I love you too".

He leans closer and plants the most gentle kiss on lips. He strokes my hair as he pulls away.

"Can you get JJ here?" I wonder

"Of course I can. And tomorrow is Saturday so no lost school days"

"Wow. Spoken like a true dad there"

He laughs and I smile.

"You can do it, mommy" JJ tries to cheer me up. I smile at her, but in reality I want to sit down and beat the crap out of Bucky.
