Kehlani P.O.V

"KEHLANI!!"

I snap out of my thoughts. I look at my room door and see Makayla standing there with Adeya in her arms.

Adeya was chewing on her fingers, looking at me. My heart skipped a beat seeing my baby. She doesn't know how much she has saved me from myself.

"I'm coming" I'm so tired. I've been literally living at work most of this week, and last night was the only night I could sleep in my bed.

I pulled my covers off of me. I huffed, mentally preparing myself for work. I have to go into surgery today, and it looks like it's gonna be a long one.

I walked to my bathroom and got into the shower. I stood there for a minute, thinking about what's going on with me. I've been doing so good so far with balancing family and career. Adeya is getting older, and so am I. I just can't keep doing shit I used to.

I washed and stepped out. I dried myself and wrapped my towel around me, grabbing my toothbrush and toothpaste to brush my teeth.

I was brushing my teeth while I looked for some panties and a bra. I put them on and walked back to the bathroom to spit and rinse out my mouth.

I walked back in to put on my clothes. I stopped in front of my mirror and looked at myself.

I turned my body slightly to the right side and the left side. I grabbed my phone off my dresser and took a few pics.

I posted some on my Instagram and continued to put my clothes on. I walked to the kitchen where everyone was at.

I looked at my watch that was sitting on the island. I got a couple minutes to spare. I got my food and stuff out the fridge for work.

I felt something hit my leg. I looked down and saw it was Adeya. She had bumped into my leg while crawling and decided to sit there.

She was about to turn around to crawl back into the living room, but I bent down and picked her up.

"Hey, my Mowgli Bear," I said, giving her kisses. She was laughing and squirming in my arms. I swear her laugh makes a long day seem bearable.

She tried to give me a kiss back but just drooled on my cheek.

"Thank you!!!" I said, smiling at her. She gave me back a wide smile showing her two teeth and her gums. She clapped her hands in excitement, making me giggle at her perfection.

"Lani, you remember Ali, right?" I looked and gave Destin my attention. I frowned, a bit confused as to why he was asking.

"Yeah, why?"

He got up from the island and put his plate in the sink, standing in front of me and leaning on it.

Adeya was talking, but it wasn't words; it was just sounds and drool.

"You want uncle, Destin?" I said, then leaned close to him. He put his hands out, but she just clung on to me.

"He keeps blowing me up, trying to get in contact with you." He continued.

I was about to respond when Adeya grabbed hold of my hair. I tried to take her hand out of it without her ripping it out. She had a death grip.

When she finally let go, I took her hand and moved it gently over my hair.

"Gentle, gentle," I said in a calming voice. Then I put her hand on her head and said the same thing. She started playing with her own hair.

I focused back on what Destin was talking about.

"He's what? Why?" I really do not care about anything right now but making sure Adeya is good and going to work.

Destin gave me a 'bitch are you serious' look. I rolled my eyes. I'm tired of having this conversation.

"Well, tell him I'm not interested. I have a good job and a daughter, and I'm comfortable and happy for the first time in a while. Getting back into that life is just not what I want right now." I said, walking to Adeya's playpen. I put her down to play with her toys and went back to the kitchen to pack up my stuff.

I don't wanna leave my baby girl. I'm off tomorrow, so I plan to spend the day just her and me.

I put my food in the lunch box and grabbed my work bag.

"But Keh, you shouldn't give up on a dream you've had since you were like seven because of a couple niggas wanna give their unwanted and unneeded opinion."

I walked back over to my daughter and bent down to kiss her head.

"Mommy will see you later, beautiful. And tell ya uncles and aunts to leave me alone, and I'm happy the way my life is."

She wasn't paying me any attention; she just kept playing and chewing on her toys.

I grabbed my keys and continued outside to my car. I don't have the headspace to deal with this. I need to clear my head before I get to work so I can prepare for this surgery.
