Chapter 64

Kehlani POV

The end of next month? Damn it.

I mean, music has always been an escape for me. It mellows me out when it gets hectic for me. But this has been putting food on the table for my family, and it's not about the glitz and glamour.

Waking up every day knowing I'm going to work to help someone live another day is such a breath of fresh and a motivator. Music was like that until it became about release dates and appearances.

I mean, operating on a person isn't any better, but I trust myself more because of the amount of control I have. With music, I don't feel like I have control over anything, but sometimes the lyrics.

I would love to have more time with my family, and I could have that with music more so than being head of a hospital.

I wish I could do both. The decision would be easier then.

I put my head in my hands and took a deep inhale, and exhaled. I looked at the arm of the couch at my watch and saw the time.

I have 3 hours until I leave. I'm going to try and store this in the back of my head and finish out my shift.

I'm so happy JJ is coming home. I need to talk to someone unbiased.

JJ is Toni and Josh's oldest son. He is probably coming home to tell them about his engagement with Julie.

I was taken out of thought by a knock ok the door.

"You can come in," I answered, getting myself together. It was Elise.

"You okay?" She said, closing the door behind her. She was trying to figure it out herself but couldn't.

"Um, yeah, I'm fine" I got up and put my bag back in my locker.

"Ummhmm," she looked me up and down. I looked over at her and did the same thing.

She rolled her eyes. "Did you hear about Dr. Carter retiring?"
She said, taking off her white coat.

"Really?" I asked, acting like I didn't know anything. People know Dr. Carter and me but only the surface. I dont want them to think I get special treatment because of how his family took me in as family.

"Yeah, I wonder who's gonna replace him, though. Mike said he told him he would take the position when he leaves." I rolled my eyes. Mike is such a snob. He thinks everything has to revolve around him and that he's better than everyone because he is Josh's nephew.

"I hope not," I said, putting on my white coat and removing my scrub cap.

"Same, do wanna make his ego bigger than it already is," she said, changing her shoes.

"Speaking of big heads, I have a delivery," she said, getting up and washing her hands.

She was drying off her hands and was about to open the door.

I closed it, leaving my hand on the door. I looked her in her eyes, trying to break her out of her attitude.

She rolled her eyes and folded her arms.

"Move," she said, staring me in the eyes.

I stood there for a minute, trying to find a weakness in her eyes. I smiled and saw her eyes twinkle.

"You like me, like me dont you?" I said teasingly.

"Girl move," She tried to move me, but I blocked it and grabbed her by her neck, and pulled her into a deep kiss.

She relaxed on my grip and moaned in my mouth. I pulled back, smirking.

"see you after you get off." I opened the door and left her there to get herself together.

I went to do my rounds. I thought I saw Y/n while I left one of my patient's rooms.

I texted her to make sure it was her and that I wasn't tripping. I waited a bit for a response but never got one.

I put my phone back and my pocket and continued finishing my rounds.

"Hey, Nurse Sherly," I said, making her look up from the computer screen.

"You bring anything in today?" The woman gossips daily but knows how to cook up a storm.

She cooks something for the staff every other week. She will take junk behind ya0 back, but she will also make sure you are fed.

She's the best of both worlds, I guess you can say.

"Yes, baby, it's in the break room, but I dont know how much is left. Y'all be eattin like y'all never had food before," She mumbled the last part, but I heard her.

I shook my head and chuckled. "Alright, thank you," I said, walking to the break room and saw everything was almost gone.

"Damn, y'all must've been hungry as fuck." I said to myself. I grabbed an apple out of the fridge and continued my rounds until it was time for me to clock out.
