Kehlani POV

Before walking in, I took a deep breath and released, easing some adrenaline I felt running through me.

????????¿¿¿Time Skip¿¿¿????????

The surgery was successful. Even though I've done this for a while, I still get nervous and overthink, but once I'm in the room with my patient and my team, it goes away.

"Aye, good work in there." I looked and saw Josh walking into the office.

"Appreciate it. I learn from the best." Josh was my mentor and taught me everything I know, even helped with my residency.

He took me under his wing, and being able to work beside him as one of the top surgeons in the country is an honor.

"No, what you do is instinctive, and I can't teach that." He says, drying his hands off.

"Thank you," I said, sitting down opening my bag.

"No problem," he said, about to leave.

"Wait, Josh," I said, grabbing my phone out my bag and closing it back up.

He turned around, closing the door.

"Is it true you're leaving?" he gave me a half smile and shook his head.

"Before I answer that, who did you hear this from?" He said, leaning against the door with his hands in his pockets.

I just looked at him because we already knew the answer. Sherly is a nurse who's been working here since the 90s. She knows everything that happens in and outside of the hospital.

We tell her every time we see her that it's time for her to retire, but she shrugs it off.

"That old lady is gonna be the death of me. Yes, yes, I'm leaving," He said, walking to sit next to me.

"You know Tony wants me to be around more, and we ain't getting any younger, so I gotta retire."
I nodded understanding. His son and I went to the same medical
school.

I went on a scholarship that I later found out was funded by Josh and his wife.

Tony dedicated to their youngest, who passed in a car accident on his way to class at the school.

They only award it every two years, and you needed to be at the very top of the top even to get a glance from them.

So choosing me, even though the closest thing I had to medical knowledge was Grays Anatomy, meant a lot to me, and still does.

"And I'm gonna recommend you to take my place." I looked at him like he had said something offensive to me.

"Dr. Carter-" he gave me the look he always gives when I talk formally with him.

"I mean, Josh, are you sure? I mean, I appreciate you believing in me this much, but I don't think I can fill those shoes." I know I'm good at what I do, but being in charge of a whole hospital was the last thing I thought could happen to me.

"Lani, Dont over think it. As you said, you learned from the best." He said with a sly grin. I hugged him, chuckling.

"No, but seriously, I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think you were ready or fit. You've accomplished more than Tony, and I could have ever imagined in such little time.

I look down, nodding. If he feels like I'm ready, then I guess I am. I don't know, though running a department is one thing; a whole entire fucking hospital is something different.

"Toni and I were talking last night about how similar you and Maddison we're. Now y'all have your differences; you are more laid back while Maddie was, let's say...hyperactive." We both chuckled.

He was looking forward at the plaque on the wall in front of us. Maddie was their youngest who passed. She wanted to be a surgeon, and on the day of her final exam, she got into an accident.

Josh bought the hospital from a previous owner and dedicated the surgical wing to his daughter Maddie.

"Toni always says that when we were looking at candidates, Maddison guided her to pick you. She said something just clicked when she saw your file." I smiled, looking at Maddie's plaque. I hope one day I can live up to their family's greatness.

They've done so much for me, and I want to show them that their time and energy weren't wasted.

"Or it could be just her getting old and senile." I shook my head as he chuckled.

"Don't let Mama T hear you say that." He waved me off.

"Yeah, yeah. But I've heard that you are a musician. Is that true?" he said. I frowned, confused as to how he knew about my music.

He is a country, classical type of guy, so my music was not something I thought he would be interested in.

"How-"

"Nurse Sherly was talking about went I came in to do some paperwork this morning." I rolled my eyes.

"Now, if you want to pursue this, then by all means, do so. Toni and I are behind you 1000%. I dont wanna put you in a box when there is no box."

"Well, I don't make music anymore. I used to years ago, but things didn't go as planned."

"So you chose to be a doctor?" He said, confused. I shook my head. Why is everyone thinking it's weird of me choosing to be a doctor after the music situation?

"Look, like I said, if you want to make the music Toni and I will support you. If you choose to stay in the medical field, we will support you. Either way, you got us by your side." he said, putting a hand on my shoulder and squeezing it.

He got up and walked to the door.

"But let me know before the need of next month so I can decide on who to give the position to." he looked at me, and I nodded, telling him I understood.

He nodded and opened the door to leave.

"Oh, and Toni said you must come over for dinner tomorrow. JJ is coming home for a surprise or something like that. I was trying to read my newspaper when she told me."

He said, leaving and closing the door behind him. I smiled, but it dropped when the door closed.
