Chapter Twelve

"Does your temple still hurt?"
I look up at Ochako who sits in the seat behind me on the bus.
After our teachers arrive, some villains have managed to escape, including what appears to be their leader.
Fortunately, we are all okay except Midoriya, who broke his arm for a change.

We are finally on our way back home, where I can't wait to take a nice shower and throw myself into bed.
I simply nod to Uraraka even though it still stings a little from the cut.
"Yes, as soon as I get home I will disinfect it." I reply, giving her a smile.
"Are you sure? I can always ask a teacher to give us some band-aids."
"Oh no really. It's just a tiny cut. I'll think about it later for real. Thanks though." I liquidate with a wave of my hand.

After what happened, the last thing to worry about is my stupid temple.
"Wait, I'll take care of it." Behind Ochako I see Momo appear, who, thanks to her quirk, creates disinfectant and band-aids.
"But, there was no need!" I tell her blushing slightly for creating the trouble.

"No problem! It's normal to help each other, especially among friends. Now I'll do it."
She waves me over to the seat by the window, so I immediately carry out Yaoyorozu's orders.
Meanwhile, I see a resigned Shoto, sitting next to Aoyama.
The girl sits next to me and starts soaking a cotton ball with disinfectant.

"How are you feeling otherwise?" She asks me disinfecting the wound.
I wince a little at the burning.
"I don't know. I still have adrenaline in my system. I think I'll be able to analyze the situation better tonight at home."
"I understand you. Everything happened so fast that we didn't even have time to rationalize it."
With that said, we remain silent while she finishes putting on the band-aid.

"That's it." The girl gives me a huge smile and gives a thumbs up.
"Thank you very much Momo."
I smile at her before resting my head on her shoulder.
Shortly afterwards I feel her head resting on mine and so we both fall asleep.

"Mei. Mei wake up."
I feel my shoulder shake slightly so I slap the hand that is touching me. I hear snickering and a cell phone unlocking.
"Turn off the ringer or you'll hear it, you idiot. "Someone throws a slap at someone else and that only disturbs my sleep even more.

"Let her wake up in peace poor thing. Look at that peaceful little face."
A female voice, I think Yaomomo, replies before shaking me a little more.
"Mei, we've arrived come on."
I grunt loudly before turning my head the other way.
"She has drool on the side of her mouth."
"Ew. COME ON SNAP NOW!"

And then a beam of light hits me square in the face.
"THE FLASH IDIOT! TURN IT OFF!"
I slowly open my eyes, and having been awakened in the worst way, I'm not exactly the most sympathetic.

Next to me I notice Shoto trying to close his cell phone, while next to him Mina, Bakugo and Denki look away, pretending not to notice.
I look ruefully at them both and with a leap I step over Momo, still sitting next to me.
"I'm going to kill you. All four of you. With the last energy I have left." I say as some red light starts coming out of my hands.
"COME ON EVERYONE GET OFF THE BUS. WE'RE HERE."
We hear the voice of our class representative standing at the door.

"You are safe. For now." I pass them, continuing to snort from my not-so-quiet sleep.
Is it possible that we can never be peaceful?
Stepping off the bus, I hardly have time to touch the ground with my foot, when I feel two arms pick me up and hold me.
Still a little groggy, I stay balanced and try to figure out who the person is.

"My little girl. I got so scared."
I smile, recognizing both the voice and the scent of my mother.
I immediately return her embrace and relax in her arms.

She breaks away from the embrace and takes my face in her hands, beginning to inspect it.
"Did they hurt you? You have a band-aid on your face. Oh my God! What did they do to you? Does it hurt? KEI! YOUR DAUGHTER IS SICK!" My father, who is behind her, smiles a little at her reaction.

"I think it's just a little scratch honey." He says stroking her back and giving me a tender kiss on the head.
"You think so, look how pale she is."
"Mom, it's my complexion. I'm as white as milk." I tell her giggling.
"No no honey. You are much whiter than usual. Come on let's go home and I'll make you drink some wine that makes blood." She takes me by the hand as if I were still five years old.

Does this embarrass me? A little bit but I've gotten used to it by now.
Even in front of other people.
I turn around and notice that Shoto is watching us.
His expression is wistful and sad.
No one is here to pick him up.
My father follows my gaze and immediately realizes this.

"Shoto, Fuyumi said she's waiting for you at home because she had some last things to take care of. Please come with us in the car."
I see him approach him and put an arm around his shoulders.
"How are you, boy?"

Shoto stiffens, not used to physical contact, unlike my family.
"Fine. Thank you Kei. And I'm sorry. I couldn't prevent Mei from getting hurt. I apologize to both of you."
In the meantime that he says these words he hides his face from our view by turning his head.

Without a second thought I walk over to him and throw my arms around his neck.
I hold him tightly to me to comfort him.
He remains motionless for a moment before holding me too.
He strokes my back and sinks his head on my shoulder.
"I'm sorry." He whispers against my neck.
"It's okay."

As I pull away from the hug, I notice Momo and Mina making signs of approval.
And through it all, my good mood has almost completely returned.
