You made your way through the Ruins, eventually stumbling upon Toriel's home. It was surrounded by foliage. You were about to walk near it, but Toriel stepped out. It looked like she was on the phone. You froze. "Yes, yes. I know. But, there's something strange about their soul... it looks like a gemstone." She explained. You stayed silent, listening in.

Toriel nodded. "Yes, alright. Understood. I must go and get them now, but I will call again later. Goodbye." She says. She waits a moment before hanging up. Then she begins to walk again. You try to make yourself not look suspicious, looking at the plants. It doesn't take Toriel very long to find you. "Oh, my child! I'm sorry that I took such a long time. I guess it was foolish of me to try to surprise you like this.. follow me, my child." She says, offering her paw to you once again.

You take Toriel's paw and walk into the house with her. "Do you smell that?" She asks softly. You inhale, trying to figure out what she's talking about. "Surprise! I made a butterscotch-cinnamon pie to celebrate your arrival!" She announced happily. You smiled softly. She seemed happy about it, so you wouldn't ruin that.

"Oh, one more thing! This way!" Toriel says, leading you down the hallway in her home. "Your own room!" She announces, opening the door. You looked around. "Wait.. is something burning? M-Make yourself at home!" She says nervously, quickly leaving you to your own devices. A soft carpet sits in the center of the room. It looks like a kid's room.

On the wall is a drawing of a flower. Beneath it is a toy chest. Beside that were some shelves with a photo on it. It was Toriel with two other goat creatures. Maybe her family. You couldn't know for sure. You walk over to the bed, running your hand along the blanket. It feels soft. You slip off your shoes and clamber into the bed, laying your head on the squishy pillow. A little rest couldn't hurt, right?

You wake up to the smell of fresh pie. You smile softly, getting up and out of bed. You wander down the hallway and into the living room, where Toriel is waiting for you. A soft frown comes to your face. What? You were still here? You thought this whole thing had been a dream. "Hello, my child. Did you have a nice rest?" She asked softly. You nodded, though you were partially lying. Your rest would have been a lot better if you woke up at home.

"Oh dear! I've forgotten to ask! Child, what is your name?" Toriel questions, seeming a little upset with herself. For a moment, you didn't want to respond. Then, you realized her knowing your name would do you no harm. "I'm (Y/N)." You replied. She smiled. "That's a lovely name." She complimented, closing her book and setting it off to the side.

Toriel continued to ask you simple questions for a while, trying to get to know you better. You didn't mind it too much, even if it seemed a little nosy to you. She was sweet, so you didn't mind. When the questions were through, Toriel thanked you for your answers and gently ruffled your hair. "I'll be right back, okay? I have something important to do." She stood up and left the room. You sat quietly for a few minutes, before browsing Toriel's bookshelf.

One book in particular caught your eye. It looked older than all the rest. You gently took it out, brushing the dust off of it. 'Species of Monsters; by' the name is torn off. You scanned through the book. Several pages caught your interest. The first was about boss monsters. These are powerful monsters whose souls can persist after death, even if just for a few moments.

Another page was about skeletons. Apparently, they were all wiped out during the great war. Well, all except for one. His name was scratched out, though. Apparently, he became the royal scientist. He worked beside the king for a long time, until he randomly disappeared one day. Shortly thereafter, two skeletons appeared in Snowdin, another area of the Underground.

The rest of the pages described various other monster species. Rabbits, ghosts, frogs, and the like. It didn't take you long to finish the story. Once you did, you gently placed it back on the shelf and searched for another one to read. The next one that grabbed your interest was a story describing the different areas of the Underground. You grabbed it off of the shelf and began to read, wanting to know more about the place you were trapped in.

Toriel walked back into the house as you were placing the book back on the shelf. "Hello, my child." She greets happily, walking into the living room. You smile softly. "Hello," You reply, making sure you had put the book back properly. Toriel sat in her recliner, putting on her reading glasses and grabbing her book from before.

Your curiousity burned inside of you. "Uhm... Toriel?" You asked softly. She looked up from her book. "Yes, my child? What is it?" She questioned with a sweet smile. You felt anxious. "I want to leave the Ruins." You said, pushing away your fear. Toriel looked almost horrified. "What?!" She exclaimed. She shook her head, taking a moment to compose herself. "Excuse me, my child. I must go do something." She stood up, walking out of the room.

Toriel's footsteps trailed down to the basement. You followed her, wanting to see what she was doing. She heard you. "You wish to leave the ruins, do you not?" She asked. You weren't sure if you were supposed to answer. "Ahead of us lies the end of the Ruins. A one-way exit to the rest of the Underground." Toriel explained. "I am going to destroy it." Dread welled up inside of you. What? Then you would be stuck here forever!

You continued to follow Toriel, wanting to stop her. "You naive child. Do you not understand?" Pain filled Toriel's voice as tears seeped into her eyes. You weren't sure if she was angry or sad. "Every child that comes down here meets the same fate. They come. They leave. They die. I have seen it over and over again." Toriel was beginning to spiral.

You tried to get a word in, but to no avail. "Child, if you leave the Ruins, they... Asgore... will kill you." Toriel said, stopping at a purple door. You stood a few feet away from her, dread welling up within you. You had to leave. "You wish to leave so badly? Then prove it to me. Prove to me that you are strong enough to survive!" Toriel entered a battle with you, and your soul appeared in front of you.
