The first person to find (Y/N)'s body was Asgore. He had woken up from his nap, going about his rounds in new home. He froze, his eyes widening. He knelt down to their lifeless body, gently placing his paw on their throat. No pulse. He felt sick. How had this happened? Why had this happened? He didn't understand.

Asgore carefully picked up (Y/N), walking them to the throne room. He placed them on his throne, deep sadness overcoming him. "You poor child.. I'm sorry this has happened to you. If only I'd gotten there sooner..." He muttered, closing his eyes. Just then, someone burst into the room. Asgore shot up, turning to look. It was Sans.

"Sans? What are you doing here?" Asgore asked, beyond confused at this point. Sans' gaze darted around frantically. "Have you seen them?" He asked, his voice breathless. Asgore's eyebrows furrowed. "Seen who..?" He questioned. Sans' gaze landed on (Y/N)'s lifeless body atop the throne. Oh. Asgore understood now.

Sans slowly approached the throne. Asgore stepped aside, figuring he probably needed some space. It was silent for a few moments. "Did you do this?" Sans asked, his gaze not leaving (Y/N)'s corpse. Asgore was appalled. "What? No. They snuck past me. When I found them.. they were already dead." He explained.

More silence. Sans' hands clenched into fists. "Damnit.." He muttered. Asgore reached out carefully. "Do you want to go sit down? Maybe have some tea?" He offered, wanting to help the poor skeleton. Sans didn't respond. "I'll, uh.. take that as a no.." Asgore said, backing up.

Sans' fingers brushed against (Y/N)'s cheek. Their skin was cold to the touch. "Why didn't you let me help you, kid..? We could've done this together. We could've had a plan. Why did you have to be so.." He trailed off, pain and regret sinking deep into his soul. "stubborn." He barely managed to finish the thought. He was devastated. Of course, loss was nothing new for him.

Though, people Sans lost usually came back after a reset.

With (Y/N), though, it was different. (Y/N) wasn't even supposed to fall. Their entire existence down here was a mistake. A mistake that changed Sans' life, sure, but that didn't change anything. A reset wouldn't bring them back. Nothing would. "Sans, I-" Asgore started, feeling a need to comfort Sans.

But it was too late.

Sans had already teleported away, taking (Y/N)'s body with him.

~

For days, Sans stayed locked away in his room. Not moving. Not eating. Not sleeping. Just sitting there, holding (Y/N). Holding their corpse. Their body that would never hold life again. Sans could barely himself to look at them. Every time he did, he felt the pain all over again. Yet, at the same time, it was hard to look away. If he did, it felt like he was forgetting them. Forgetting their warmth, forgetting their smile, forgetting how they loved him.

People were starting to get worried. News of (Y/N)'s death had spread through the underground. Many monsters came to try to comfort Sans, but he wouldn't do so much as let them in. Gifts from various people were sat outside the door, waiting for Sans to come receive them. But he couldn't do that. He couldn't bring himself to move. He couldn't bring himself to talk. He couldn't bring himself to do anything.

In fact, he didn't think he'd be able to bring himself to do anything ever again.
