You walked to Hotlands. The idea of soulmates was just something so interesting to you. Finally, you came upon the familiar sight of the lab. You stepped inside, seeing Alphys at her desk. "O-Oh! (Y/N)!" She hopped up from her chair, going over to greet you. A soft smile formed on your face. "Alphys, hey!" You said, pulling her into a hug.
Alphys gave you a soft hug in return. "So, what's up? Why are you here?" She asked. You took a moment to find your words. "I wanted to ask you about souls. And uh.. soulmates." You replied, a little embarrassed. Alphys immediately lit up. "Soulmates?! I've been wanting to talk about that forever! Come here!" She grabbed your hand and pulled you over to her computer, opening up several different documents.
"Okay, so- it's been speculated about since pretty much forever. E-Ever since the existence of souls was proven. It was like there were couples who were fated to be together. M-Monsters who were meant to be." Alphys began to explain, pulling up a chart of different types of souls. Although you saw dozens of human souls, you saw only one monster soul. "Do monster souls not have different variations?" You wondered aloud.
Alphys shook her head. "Nope. Just humans! Their souls c-come in loads of different colors, which implies their leading trait. Sort of.. what guides them, y'know?" She replied, adjusting her glasses. You nodded. You supposed that made sense. "What's mine?" You asked, looking down at your chest. Alphys shrugged. "I don't know. I-If you'd like, I could take a look!" She offered.
You nodded. "Yeah! Just uh.. be careful." You said. You weren't quite sure how she would react to seeing your soul, given its state. Alphys closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened them, your soul had come out of your chest. Her eyes widened. Yeah, that was about the reaction you expected.
"I-I've.. never seen a soul like yours before." Alphys marveled, staring with her mouth slightly agape. You felt a little embarrassed. "Can I..?" Alphys trailed off, her hands reaching towards your weak soul. The light it gave off flickered every so often. You hesitantly nodded. Alphys carefully took your soul in her hands. A warm, comforting sensation filled your body. "This is.. a-amazing. Your soul is so special." Alphys' voice was soft. She was afraid that if she talked too loud, she might hurt you.
Alphys' gaze finally settled on the large crack in your crystalline soul. Her thumb gently grazed over it. You winced softly. "Sorry-" Alphys quickly said, looking back up at you. "What.. what happened to you?" She asked. You were taken aback. "What are you talking about?" You replied, confused. Alphys let go of your soul and it returned to your chest. "C-Cracks only form in souls after intense trauma has occurred. Either emotional, or physical." She explained.
You supposed that made sense. "So.. what happened?" Alphys repeated her question. You knew you couldn't tell her. "I don't know." You lied. Alphys frowned. "W-Well, I'm sure it'll heal someday." She replied, attempting to comfort you. She wasn't really good at it, but that was okay. "What's my trait?" You asked, wanting to change the subject.
Alphys jumped a little. "O-Oh, right! Well- it's actually a more uncommon one, especially nowadays. Y-Your trait is selflessness. It's a s-subset of the justice and kindness traits." She explained, now back to her nerdy vibe. It was a subset? What did that mean? "Subset?" You wondered aloud. Alphys smiled, pulling up a much simpler soul chart on her computer.
"Yeah! Y-You see, human souls have seven main traits. Determination, bravery, justice, kindness, patience, integrity, and perseverance. H-However, there are also different traits which are called subsets, th-these are sort of fusions of traits. For example, there's morality, which is a subset of integrity and perseverance." Alphys explained. You looked at the soul chart intently, noticing one soul that was different from the others. "What's that one?" You asked, pointing to it.
Alphys was quiet for a second. "Th-That's a corrupted soul. Those belong to people who've given up. P-People who've either done terrible things, or experienced terrible things. Each soul trait has a corrupted version, b-but that gets complicated.." She said, staring at the screen for a moment before turning her monitor off. "A-Anyway, that's about all the research I have on s-souls right now! If y-you want to know more, I'm afraid I w-won't be any help."
The way Alphys was acting now was odd. It was almost like she was trying to hide something from you. Deciding to brush it off, you smiled softly. "Thanks for all the help, Alphys. I think I'm gonna head back to Snowdin now." You said, gesturing towards the door. Alphys seemed grateful to be able to get back to her work. "Okay! S-See you later!" She said quickly. You left the lab shortly after.
The walk back to Snowdin gave you ample time to think about everything you'd just learned. It was a lot to try and take in all at once. Souls were so much more complicated than you imagined. Plus, Alphys said she'd never seen a soul like yours before. That meant yours was special. At least to the underground, at least. Maybe it even meant your soul had special properties.
Maybe your soul could absorb another human soul.
You pushed that thought out of your mind. That was a bad idea. Maybe you should run it by Frisk. They might know something. You were snapped out of your thoughts as you stepped into cold air of Snowdin. You glanced around as you walked, looking at all the monsters. All of the seemingly happy monsters.
You felt a pang of sadness at how content they all seemed. Had they really given up on seeing the surface someday? Was all of their hope really gone? You tried to ignore the feeling that welled up deep inside you. As you entered your home, you noticed it was empty. There was no one there, not even Frisk. You took a seat on the couch.
But still, that sinking, sad feeling didn't go away. It hurt. It burned. Taking a deep breath, you took out your soul. The light was flickering. Pulsating with its own heartbeat. You stared into the crack, watching as your soul floated in front of you. It was almost like the crystal structure of your soul was nothing but a cover-up. A protective layer. Like there was more beneath it.
Maybe that was the key to all of this. Maybe your soul was what the underground needed. Maybe you really were their angel. Only time would truly tell. Sans walked in through the front door. "Hey, I'm home-" He looked over at you. This wasn't the first time he'd caught you staring at your soul, but it still caught him off-guard.
"Uh.. kid..?" Sans asked, walking over. You let your soul disappear, looking over. "Oh! Hey! When did you get here..?" You said, not meeting his gaze. Sans seemed concerned. "Just a second ago. Why?" He spoke carefully. He knew you were up to something. "No reason. Just curious." You replied, smiling softly.
For a moment, you wanted to tell Sans about your revelation. You wanted to tell him about your soul. But you thought better of it. If you did tell him, he'd probably say that was some ridiculous notion and you needed to be more careful. Sans sighed softly. "Kid, I'm worried about you." He admitted. You perked up a little. "Worried? Why?" You asked, trying to deflect any suspicion.
The look in Sans' eyesockets was serious. You went quiet. "You've got this crazy hero complex right now. If you're not careful, it could put you in serious danger." He explained. He struggled a bit to say it. You felt a bit of anger bubble up in you. Hero complex? It wasn't a complex. You were going to save everyone, whether he liked it or not. "What do you know?" You muttered, looking away.
It was quiet for a moment. "Really, (Y/N)? I know a lot more than you fucking do." He spat. You stood up. "Fuck you." You left without another word. You didn't want to do this right now. You didn't want to argue. Fearing that Sans might try to come after you, you ran deep into Snowdin forest.
You didn't stop running until your lungs felt icy from the cold. Tears threatened to spill out of your eyes. Yet, they weren't tears of sadness. They were tears of anger. Why couldn't he just understand? Why couldn't he just try to help you? Your hands balled into fists. He probably didn't believe you could do it. He probably thought you were too weak.
That thought snapped something in you. Sans thought you were too weak to save the monsters.
Well, you'd fucking show him.
