You and Sans sat together for a while, thankfully having lightened the mood. It was nice to just hang out, without the pressure of having to keep conversation or even eye contact. You just enjoyed each other's company. You leaned your head on Sans' shoulder, sighing contently. It almost felt like it was just the two of you right now. Like no one else even existed.
"Hey, Sans?" You asked softly, not wanting to interrupt the nice moment. Sans snapped out of whatever trance he had been in. "Hm? What is it, kid?" His eye lights trailed over to you. A wave of embarrassment washed over you. This was something you knew you needed to say, but it was hard to find the right words. "I.. I really care about you. I'm glad I met you." You replied, one hand grabbing a small fistful of Sans' sweater.
Sans smiled, rubbing your back gently. "I'm glad I met you, too. You really are something special." He said. You could tell that he struggled to get that out. He wasn't really the crazy affectionate type. He'd probably been through some stuff. So, instead of making him say more, you just gently nuzzled into him. He seemed to like that.
"Uh.." A voice trailed off. You looked up to see Frisk standing on the stairs. You felt your face heat up in embarrassment, but you tried to brush it off. "How did you sleep?" You asked, wanting to make sure they were okay. Frisk shrugged. "I slept okay. Thanks, by the way.." They replied, seeming a little embarrassed themselves.
You smiled softly, glad to see Frisk was doing alright. You'd been worrying about them, after all. "It's no problem." You said. Truly, you meant that. It was no trouble at all to take care of someone who needed it. Frisk smiled weakly. "I'm gonna go head to waterfall. Y'know, get my exploring over and done with." They walked through the living room, going to leave. You got up.
"Wait- let me come with you." You called. Frisk stopped, glancing back at you. "To keep you company." You explained. Frisk shrugged. They didn't seem to mind either way. You made your way over to Frisk, opening the door for them. The two of you walked out. You gave Sans a little wave as you closed the door.
Frisk was quiet as the two of you walked. It wasn't long until you made it to waterfall. "Was keeping me company really the only reason you wanted to come with me?" Frisk finally asked, stopping in their tracks. You frowned softly. "I wanted to keep you safe. I know you've done this before, but everyone deserves to have someone protect them." You answered. Honestly, you felt conflicted about even saying anything.
You were doing this to protect Frisk. That much was true. But would they be mad about that? It wasn't meant to be patronizing or anything. "Oh..." Frisk trailed off. Their gaze stayed on the ground. "Thanks." They muttered, continuing to walk. You followed after them, still feeling bad. You wanted to be friends with them, but you felt like every time you tried you messed up even more.
After that, you decided it was best to stay quiet. You and Frisk walked around waterfall in uncomfortable silence. It felt like neither of you knew what to say. Neither of you knew what to do. Frisk stopped walking. They sat down, looking at their reflection in the river. You sat beside them, unsure of what to do.
Suddenly, Frisk swiped at their reflection, splashing water onto you. "Wh- hey!" You complained, water soaking into your shirt. Frisk looked over. It seemed like they hadn't even noticed you were there. "Sorry." They replied, looking guilty. You sighed softly, gently placing your hand over theirs. "It's okay, just a bit of water." You said, smiling. It seemed like they felt a little better.
"Why did you do that, anyway?" You asked, curious what brought them to get upset. Frisk went quiet for a moment, glancing back at the water. Back at their reflection. "Sometimes, when I look at myself, all I see is them. I know that they don't always have bad intentions, but I hate seeing them in myself. I'm my own person. I'm not them and I never will be." Frisk ranted, staring down at the ground now. It seemed that they couldn't stare at their reflection anymore.
You were a little confused. More than that, even. "Who are you talking about?" You questioned. Frisk couldn't bring themself to look up at you. "Chara. Their being attached itself to mine. I can hear them in my head. It drives me crazy." They explained, their hands gripping onto their sleeves. You placed a hand on their shoulder. "I see.. I'm sorry you have to go through that." You tried to be comforting, but you weren't sure how well that was working out.
"Maybe there's some way we could get them to leave you alone?" You offered, wanting to make Frisk feel better. They scoffed. "Yeah, right. I've been stuck with them since the first timeline." They replied. It upset you a little that they rejected your idea so quickly. "How do you know they don't just need closure?" You asked. Frisk looked over at you. "The only closure Chara usually wants is killing everyone. I don't think they care about that stuff." They didn't seem interested in the conversation anymore.
Feeling like you messed up again, you went quiet. Frisk was quiet, too. After a minute, they sighed. "You don't have to try to fix my problems, y'know. I can deal with them on my own." They said, their gaze down on the ground. You stared at the water. "I know. I just.. feel like I have to protect you. Keep you safe. Like, uh.." You trailed off, unable to think of the word.
Frisk seemed to understand what you were talking about. "Like a sibling." They said. You nodded. "Yeah, like a sibling." You agreed. Frisk smiled softly, looking over at your reflection in the water. "I've never had a sibling before." They mentioned, looking like they felt a little better. You put an arm around their shoulder. "I guess I'll just have to set a great example then, won't I?" You joked. Frisk chuckled.
"I guess you will."
