Warnings: Swearing?

I think this is the longest one I've written, or one of the longest. This is why it took me forever to get out, so sorry I kinda dropped off the face of the planet for a little while

Enjoy!

"Just take out the trash and then you're good to go, y/n." My boss told me, her attention on the register while she counted up the total for the night.

I nodded tiredly, making my way around the server station and the kitchen area, collecting the full trash bags and trying my best to not accidentally drop the trash all over my freshly mopped floors. With a grunt, I pushed open the doors that lead out to the back where the dumpster lives. Small bugs skittered away at my footsteps, seeking the protection of the moist, metal dumpster. My nose scrunched up in automatic disgust as I tossed the trash bags away, disturbing the flies that had settled there.

Sirens wailed in the distance, carried through the air on the chilly night time breeze that was always perpetually blowing. It was a chillier night, nearing the end of summer and the beginning of fall.

I grabbed some fresh trash bags and replaced them on the trashcans, then made my way back to my boss, who was still working on the register.

"Trash is all set. Anything else you want me to do?" I asked, scratching the back of my neck as my boss considered any other work she wanted me to do.

"No... you're all good to go." she gave me a polite smile, which I tiredly returned.

I clocked out and grabbed my stuff out of my locker in the back of the restaurant, jingling my keys as I made my way out of the restaurant, but stopping in my tracks, remembering a question I wanted to ask.

"Oh, do you know when we'll be getting paid next?" I asked, turning on my heel right by the door.

"Uh...I believe checks will be going out at the end of next week. I'm just waiting for the payroll company to process the payments." my boss answered, closing the register drawer.

I nodded in thanks, then finally left the restaurant. I just needed to get to the end of the week, then I'd be good.

Excitement slowly rose through my veins as realization set in. My plan was coming together, becoming a reality, and I couldn't believe it.

I wanted to propose to Kate, but to do so I needed some extra money to afford the ring. I was lucky enough to get a second job at another restaurant in town, bussing tables. This, added onto my current job as a server at a newer restaurant, I was able to save up enough to get a nice ring for her and plan a nice night for the both of us. I had a few ideas as to how I was going to propose, where I was going to do it, and what the hell I was going to say to her, but I was just trying to take this one step at a time. No need to overwhelm myself over this.

Thing was, I hadn't told Kate about my second job. As far as she knows, I just have the one server job at the diner while she worked for Bishop Security and did crime fighting with Clint. I didn't like keeping the truth from her, but she would find out soon when I asked the magical words.

But there was that one uncertainty that always ran through my mind. What if she said no? Or what if she wasn't ready to get married yet? We had talked about it a few times recently and she seemed excited at the prospect of our future, but I didn't know if she was actually serious about wanting to marry me. I wanted to believe she would. I know I wanted to marry her and spend the rest of my life with her, but god only knows if she actually felt the same way.
