"I know, I said, call me soon, but I didn't expect to see you this soon." Jennifer greeted Stevie, welcoming her into her home. "Come on in."
"Thank you." Stevie forced a weak smile, a bag, containing essentials and a couple of changes of clothes, in one hand, Lily in the other. "And thank you for letting me stay here."
"No worries." Jennifer waved it off, locking the door. "I've got a bottle of wine ready if you're interested."
"Oh yeah." Stevie nodded, following her friend into the living room. "I'm sorry, I didn't ask if I should bring something. Everything just happened so fast."
"Relax." Jennifer gave Stevie a glass and lay a hand on her shoulder. "The fridge is full and there's plenty more of where that came from." She laughed pointing to the wine. "So... still sticking to there's nothing to tell." Jennifer asked, finishing the sentence with air quotes.
"Uh..." Stevie took a sip, she glanced at the TV, a trashy reality show, Jennifer was watching earlier, still on. "Dean and I broke up, I guess."
"You guess?" Jennifer gave her a look, her eyebrow raised. "What the hell happened?"
"I've met someone." Stevie began with a sigh. "While I was away. On the first night, Dean had promised to take me to dinner. I got ready, but as usual, he was busy, so I left alone. I saw him at the bar by himself too. We had passed each other earlier that day, so I went over and joined him." She paused to bring the wine glass up to her mouth. "We just clicked, you know? We spent hours talking, we went out for a walk and uh... we kissed, kind of."
"You guess, you broke up? You kind of kissed someone?" Jennifer scoffed. "Come on."
"Well, it's true. He pulled back and that was it. Then, Dean left and I saw him again." Stevie shrugged. "We flirted the whole night and we ended up in my room. We spent the whole time together, except for one day."
It took a minute for Jennifer to respond. She had known Stevie for years, she had never expected anything like that from her. "You cheated on Dean?" She asked to clarify.
"Well, obviously." Stevie rolled her eyes. "My God, Jen, you have no idea, how that man made me feel."
Jennifer smirked. "Do tell."
"I'm not telling you all the details." Stevie shook her head with a laugh. "Anyway, one day, this woman approaches Lindsey-"
"Lindsey? The man, who rocked your world?" Jennifer interrupted to ask.
"Yes. So, I see her with her tits falling out of her bikini, she's touching him all over and-" Stevie shrugged. "I got jealous. I went to separate them, thought nothing of it. Turns out, she was spying on me."
"No way!" Jennifer clapped her hands together, her mouth agape. "This sounds like something from a movie."
"Yeah." Stevie nodded, taking another sip. "That's how Dean found out about us."
"I bet he wasn't too happy about it."
"He put on quite a show." Stevie felt anger rising just thinking about it. "He was all over me, when you brought me home. We ate and then he, uh... he took me to the bedroom."
"Please, tell me, you didn't." Jennifer scrunched up her face, shaking her head.
"I couldn't. It just didn't feel right." Stevie sighed, shooing Lily away from a plate of snacks on the coffee table. "When I pushed him away, when I told him about Lindsey, he told me, he already knew."
"And he still tried to..."
Stevie nodded her head. "So, we started arguing, which ended with him asking me to get out. I did."
"I never liked him." Jennifer reached for the bottle to refill their glasses. "Disgusting pig." She then clinked her glass against Stevie's and smiled. "You're welcome to stay here for as long as you need."
