"You know how friends don't lie?"
"Yes."
"Well, there's a difference between a lie and a secret. Do you know what that difference is?"
"No."
"A lie is telling someone something that's not the truth but a secret is keeping a truth from someone but just for a little while."
"But Mike said-"
"I know what Mike said but," the car came to a stop, Ophelia turning around to grab a bag she had been hiding in her car for some time, "I think he would approve of this secret."
El was confused but still opened the bag, pulling out a blonde wig similar to the one the boys had her wear last year.
"What..."
"It's a wig for you to put on now so that we don't have to go straight home where Hopper will surely punish you for leaving the house. That wig will give you some freedom- but that is a secret we have to keep from Hopper. Understand?"
"Yes!" she nodded eagerly, "Thank you!"
"You're welcome."
She knew a movie and just acting like a normal kid for once in her life was just what El needed. Plus, it was the place in the dark and where everyone would be focused on the movie- not who the random little girl was.
"Funny," El commented when they left the theater.
"It was. Should we head home now?"
"No."
"Okay, how about some food?"
She nodded eagerly, the girls going to a nearby diner knowing how much of a fan El was of Eggo's.
"Good evening, Ophelia. And who is this little cutie?"
"Would you believe me if I said my daughter?"
"Very funny," she gave her a look, "Don't go about messing around like that. Joe told me about you and that Harrington boy's pregnancy scare."
"Oh dear god. I didn't realize Joe was a big ol' gossip."
"He's just worried about you. I mean, we watched you grow up, dear. Hell, it feels like just yesterday you and Harrington came into this diner with the biggest smiles on your faces and eyes filled with hope. To think those two little cuties are now all grown and having a baby themselves... wait, you two aren't having a baby are you?"
"No," she gave her a look, "And please don't let Hopper find out about those tests."
"Your secret's safe with me," she smiled, "What can I get you two?"
Ophelia ordered for them before the older woman walked away with a smile and she focused on el again.
"Lesson number one in life- when you want to avoid talking about something, distract them. Talk about anything else to get them to forget what they asked you in the first place... even if that did sort of bite me in the ass still."
