When Hopper opened the door the next morning and saw a young boy standing there, he knew he was in trouble.

"What do you want?"

"Where's Ophelia?"

"Who's asking?"

"Steve?" Ophelia was confused to say the least when she came out of their kitchen after failing to eat Hopper's poor attempt of breakfast.

"How is it possible you know someone already?" Hopper turned around to face a confused Ophelia, "We just got here. Unless- are you sneaking out already, young lady?"

"No!" she grew wide-eyed, "He's the neighbor."

"Her first friend," he shrugged as if it were no big deal, "Can I come in now?"

"Absolutely not," Hopper shuddered at the thought of there being a boy in his house with Ophelia, "We're going out to run errands anyway, so-"

"I'll come too."

"Don't think your parents will like-"

"I'll go grab my bag!"

Ophelia giggled watching Steve run away while she put her bag on, their breakfast already forgotten of, "I like him."

"Don't get used to it. I agreed to be your guardian not to have the Harringtons in my life and I especially don't need to add a boy to the mix."

"He's my only friend."

"You'll make more friends when you go to school next week."

Ophelia stayed silent, already knowing that probably wouldn't be happening.

It was no secret that she wasn't exactly Ms. Popular back home. Sure, she had friends but out of all of them, she was only ever close to Sara. It didn't help that she liked to read so much and kids her age found that weird. Everyone except Sara who accepted her how she was.

Now that she was gone, she wasn't really interested in getting close to anyone again- and she especially wasn't interested in feigning happiness for a bunch of strangers.

With Steve, it wasn't so hard actually being happy though. He made her forget about her sadness and didn't even ask her why she looked sad in the first place. He took her mind off of things- he helped the both of them, really.

Hopper had to admit, he liked hearing Ophelia's laugh return to her when they were out in town getting groceries, supplies for the home and finally checking into his new job.

Ophelia definitely liked spending time with Steve too. They sat together in the small kitchen of the station when he finally opened his bag, "I brought us snacks."

"Really?" she perked up, "What'd you bring?"

"Some chips. And Oreos."

"Oreos?"
