CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
( discovering creel house )After the close encounter that Max had with Vecna that day, Luna, Steve and the others got her back to the Wheeler's residence as soon as humanely possible. They were all in the basement, the boys sitting on the on the floor, Max and Luna sitting on the couch, and she and Lucas were sitting on both sides of her sister. Max had always hated clingy people, she didn't like being close.
But after the shit she just went through, all that had seemingly been thrown out the window as she was willingly allowing herself to be held and looked after by both Lucas and Luna. She was scared, that much was clear, clutching onto both of their hands like she was afraid she would start floating any second again. Her headphones were covering her ears, Kate Bush being her lifeline as she stares at nothing.
Not much else happens that night, they all eat something thanks to Mrs. Wheeler, but they all stay downstairs because they know they're not wanted by Mr. Wheeler who glares at the lot of them like they're uninvited rodents inhabiting his house. She's not sure what they ever did to the older man, but she didn't care enough to want to know either. They all fall manage to fall asleep somehow, Luna and Max share the couch, and she stokes her sister's hair until she inevitably closes her eyes and drifts off.
She hopes that she's dreaming of something's nice, like a huge group camping trip with Will and El, or maybe the waves smashing against the sand back in California.
The next morning comes, the birds chirping and the sun shining through the window's blinds of the basement door. Luna and Max are up first, and when she checks her watch she realizes they woke up late, it was around 1 and she could smell breakfast being cooked upstairs. She nudged her sister and glanced upstairs, Max agreed mutely and the both of them carefully stepped over the others sleeping on the floor and headed up the steps.
They both greeted Mrs. Wheeler, and she offered them breakfast, Mr. Wheeler just grunted at them as he read his newspaper. Max said she wasn't hungry, but Luna was starving so she took 2 pancakes and some bacon and sat down at the table with Max and Holly.
