CHAPTER FOURTY
( the five-star general )

After they were caught by the police, Luna and the kids were in the living room at the Wheeler residence. Karen Wheeler had called the cops on them, and they were sent out to find them. She found it ironic that after all the years of being completely oblivious of her children's whereabouts that she decided that now was the best time to call the cops, all that it took was an assumed serial killer running around.

If only she knew that they had all been through so much worse.

As she stood there behind the couch, waiting for the newly chosen sheriff Powell and his right hand deputy Callahan to question them, her thoughts wandered to Chief Jim Hopper. She knew that the two left in charge of the police department were doing their best with the resources that they had, but they were no match for the truth about this town.

Hopper was the perfect match, he would've know exactly what to do, or at the very least he could've helped them figure out what to do to fix their never-ending Upside Down problem.

"Now, tell me." Sheriff Powell sets his sights on the four of them, "What exactly you all were doing at the lake?" The kids all glance at eachother, their lips parted in speechlessness, neither of them having an answer, and Luna, well, she wasn't saying anything without a lawyer.

"Uh..." Dustin murmured, not knowing what to say.

"It's com--"

"We were.... we were just going for a walk." Max spoke up, cutting into Lucas's words.

"A walk." Deputy Callahan said, clearly unconvinced. "At 9:00 pm?"

"To the lake." Dustin replied, but it was more like squeaked considering how high his voice pitch had gone. Luna pinched between her brows, this was not going well. "We were gonna... take a little swim." He pauses momentarily, glancing down. "Little night swim."

"Dusty." Mrs. Henderson cried out, a nice woman who always gave Luna a box of cookies whenever she would watch over her son for her. She doesn't think she'll be getting any cookies for taking him into the woods while an assumed serial killer is running around town though, that's a real bummer. "Someone was just murdered there." She looks at Luna, "How could you take them there? We trust you with our kids."
