MAXS' HAIR WAS BEING BRAIDED BY HER MOTHER, SALLY NEXT TOO THEM CURLING HERS. They were getting ready to go too the Snowball dance, even if Sally was there to work.
She'd dressed up in a blue corduroy pinafore dress, with a black sweater underneath of it. Also keeping herself warm with a pair of tights and boots. Max had chosen a pair of red pants too go with a patterned sweater that complimented it.
"So, who do you think you'll dance with tonight?" Sally asked whilst putting her earrings in, thinking of Dustin.
"I don't know" She shrugged, looking at her finished hair in the mirror.
Sally didn't push it any further, despite wanting to know her defensiveness on the subject. They suddenly both heard Billy clearing his throat as he passed them from the door. He stopped in his tracks, looking at the two girls emotionlessly. They both gave him a scowl that made him continue walking.
After getting a couple of pictures before they left, they hopped into their mothers car and made there way too the middle school, Max's growing smile not going unnoticed from her sister.
Overall, she thought it was going to be a boring night, giving the kids drinks and snacks, until she saw a familiar face.
"Oh, hey Nance" She kindly smiled, filling up some more cups.
"Didn't realise you'd be here?" Nancy smiled back, helping her with the drinks.
"Was made to do it" She shrugged, noticing Nancy glancing in Jonathan Byers way every so often. "So, how have you been?" She tried too continue the conversation.
"Yeah, good" She nodded, but then gave up the whole awkward exterior as she fully faced her. "How's Steve? I've felt bad about the whole breakup thing"
"He's actually okay, seriously, don't feel bad about it" She answered sincerely, finding herself liking Nancy Wheeler more as she was seeing a glimpse too her caring side. Deciding too break down the awkward wall, she noticed another glance to Jonathan and spoke up about it. "You and Byers then?" She wiggled her eyebrows and leant in, causing Nancy too giggle a little.
"Yeah, it just happened" She smiled with a growing blush that she was trying to hide. "What about you and Munson then?"
"What do you mean? He's... well he's a friend" She continued filling up cups, noticing Nancy grinning at her.
"Oh please! I've seen you two in the library together"
"Then you've seen me continuously shout at him"
She nodded in agreement, but chuckled anyway. "For someone that noticed Jonathan and I, you're very oblivious"
She scoffed, quickly declining anything that she thought was going on, was most definitely not going on. "Go be with lover boy before he gets neck ache" She pushed her to walk over, smiling that the two were happy together. Whilst Steve obviously missed her, he had accepted it, and would never want her to be unhappy.
Looking around the hall, she noticed her little sister dancing with Lucas, both of them giddy with one another as they swayed around. Her eyes then trailed to Dustin who was being rejected by a group of girls, his posture deflated as he sat down on the bleacher steps.
Deciding too leave her station, she made her way over too him, passing through the swaying children, noticing Mike and Will upon the crowd. She sat down beside him and pulled him in for a side hug as he wiped his tears away.
"You don't always get the girl" She said whilst looking at Max and Lucas share a sweet kiss, a kiss that she knew was her first. "But it doesn't matter, you'll find someone kid"
He looked up at her with a small smile, appreciating her trying to comfort him. She didn't really know what to say, in her experience she'd never gotten the guy she wanted.
Refusing to let it ruin his night, she stood up and held her hand out for him, he grabbed it and she pulled him towards the dance floor, knowing he was now feeling gleeful because of the stares.
She put his hands around her waist and moved him a little closer and they began to sway to the music. "You're a good kid Dustin, even though you're a little shit half the time"
He chucked at that, reaching his hand high in the air to try and spin her around, which only half worked as she was taller than him, so she had too crouch a little.
As another slow song faded in, she felt a hand on her shoulder and turned around in confusion. Eddie stood there, not in formal wear at all, she wondered why the hell he was there.
"Can I takeover?" He asked Dustin, who walked away too his friends, now sat down with a smile. "It's the least you could do after trying to run me over"
"What are you doing here?" She asked, not pulling away away as he put his hands on her waist, a little lower and more tightly than Dustin's she realised.
"Thought I'd give you some company, we were finishing our campaign in the school" He shrugged, a smirk on his face as they swayed together.
"You're gonna get kicked out" She giggled, seeing as he'd gate crashed a middle school dance. "Don't think a leather jacket is formal attire either"
He smirked and swirled her around, bringing her back closer than before, her heart jumped at that. Soon after, the song finished and they stepped away from each other, breaking away from the immense eye contact by clearing her throat and looking down.
She looking back up, searching his brown eyes for the question of why he really was doing this, but she came up short. "I should probably get back"
"Wait" He held her hand, stopping her movements, but quickly dropped it as she stood still- breath hitched from anticipation. "Doesn't matter, have a nice Christmas Sal"
"You too Eddie" She walked away with a small frown growing.
She didn't notice the stares from her sister or from Nancy as she began to refill some empty cups again, her mind racked with the thoughts of what just happened.
"Just a friend huh?" Nancy snickered into her ear whilst Sally rolled her eyes. They were allowed too have a dance together, completely platonically. But she wondered what had made him so different by the end of it.
The night rolled on smoothly after that, the kids all decided to dance together as the music became a faster pace- Dustin specifically enjoying himself now.
