There you were, sat to the left of your husband at dinner with both of your families at the table and almost everyone was enjoying the dinner you made but your mother in law had decided that she'd be the one to hate you for no absolute reason. Looking over at your man, you admired the way he smiled and laughed at a story your sisters and father were telling and you smiled softly at the happiness on his face but you got distracted by the knocking on the door.
It seemed like nobody else heard the door so you got up quietly and answered it. Opening the door, you look down and see a woman unknown to you storm in and take a seat - your seat - and suddenly the whole atmosphere changed as your husband turned to the seat you were supposed be in, but weren't, and almost kissed this woman. Almost. Almost meaning he didn't notice you get up and answer the door and honestly thought that you'd been right there next to him. The most painful word in the English language. His face immediately lost its once happy and carefree expression and in its place was a death glare and eye roll that could rival yours as he noticed that it wasn't you sat beside him. (the Alec Lightwood eye roll y'all!)
You were still shocked in place by the front door at the audacity to just come in and take your place. As if you'd actually let her. Snapping out of your daze, you walk over to your husband, and as if he felt your presence behind him, he relaxed slightly knowing you were near but his rigid body told you that he knew this woman and didn't know how to deal with her when you were around because he knew that he'd have to tell you about the worst mistake he's ever made.
Hell, he also knew that someone had to have told her about this family dinner that was actually meant to be for announcing your news.
"Evie! I'm so happy you made it here even if you are a bit late," your mother in law exclaimed. The tempest now known as Evie, simply smiled as she got up to be embraced by Carol. (I think that's his mom's name. If it isn't, please send it in the comments so I can fix it.) Evie just gave you the evil eye as you took your place beside your husband. You smiled sweetly at her before looking over at Michael who simply kissed your forehead as held your hand under the table, giving it a squeeze. He clearly needed to find comfort in the fact that you weren't running for the hills. Your parents on the other hand, were trying to gauge your reaction as this played out.
"Mom, what the hell is she doing here? I thought this dinner was about Mike and his boyfriend," Andrea asked, confused as hell. The entire table looked at the two of you. Andrea just outed the both of you and you were about to say something but the evil bitch - sorry, Evie - beat you to it, shrieking: "Boyfriend?"Again, someone beat you to the punch. "Actually, he's my husband." This time, it was Mike. Well fuck. His mom looked like she was about to faint as soon as she heard the word husband. But the thing is, nobody could have predicted what happened next. Carol and Evie stormed out and you were both hurt and surprised to see Michael follow them, leaving you with his father, siblings and you stared longingly after them seeing your family looking at you worried in your peripheral vision.
You look at them confused until your older sister raised her hand to wipe your face and your head drooped forward as you realised that you were crying. You mumbled some stupid excuse to leave the table and went upstairs and started packing a bag as tears continued to stain your face. Eventually, you finished packing and the moment your hand touched the door to open it, someone on the other side of it barges into the room and you wiped your eyes to see your husband not looking at you but at the bag in your grasp.
He goes to take the bag from your hand but your grip on the straps of the duffel bag tighten and move it closer to your body. The hurt look on his face provoked the simmering anger to flare as you asked him: "Why did you go after her? Do you regret marrying me? Is the age gap? What is it, Michael? Because I really don't know what I did to you or your mom. I thought you already told them about us getting married? What is it! Are you ashamed of me? Of us? Tell me, which is it? Oh my God! Are you still in love with her?" He stayed silent, confirming the doubts that were swirling around in your head. Fuck this. This wasn't what you signed up for.
More tears pooled in your eyes as you asked him more questions that hurt more to ask than the other ones, your voice breaking with each question asked. "If I walked out the door, would you even notice I'm gone? Would you? If I walked out the door, would you care enough to follow? Huh? Would you? Would you even miss me at all? Answer me, would you Michael?"
His lips parted as if he was going to say something but no words left them. You scoffed, heartbroken and walked towards the door but before leaving the room, you said one last thing to him. "You promised to catch me when I fell. You lied."———————————————————————
