October had gone by in an instant, it was one of (y/n)'s favorite months, due to the beautiful colors associated with it, and the relatively docile weather. It was the night of the 31st, and just four years later the despicable would happen to Sirius Black. This Halloween was far more enjoyable than the night of the arrest, it had snuck up on (y/n)..
"I've nearly failed runes again." (y/n) sighed, she glanced at the test, which she'd crumpled up in rage.
"I can help you study next time, Remus isn't very strong in this subject." Lily teased, her smile was reassuring to (y/n), plus, Lily was a wiz in every subject at Hogwarts, it was a wonder that she hadn't broken any records yet.
"Tonight should be fine, that way it'll be fresh in my mind." (y/n) muttered, Lily nodded her head in agreement.
The two girls had just passed Jolene in the hallway, all they'd gotten from her was a little smile and a wave. Her arm was interlocked with a fair looking boy, he was tall and slim with nice hair, but he was nothing out of the ordinary. Jolene had found herself another victim, that's how Lily saw it anyway. The trio had sort of fallen out of touch after Hogsmeade, maybe Jolene felt guilty, she knew that she was in the wrong, or maybe she was through with (y/n) because she'd 'taken' Sirius from her.
"I feel like she's changed so much." (y/n) muttered, the girl was cool and sporadic when they'd first met, now she was plain and laughed too much, she'd become completely boy obsessed.
"Maybe she was always like that." Lily stated, though for once she was wrong. Jolene was a very interesting person, she'd gone and put up a wall, just as (y/n) had with Sirius. Lily couldn't see through Jolene's wall as she had with (y/n). Jolene had only reverted to such a state to protect herself from heartache, one that she knew she could have avoided if she'd only listened to (y/n)'s warnings.
"I dunno, I thought I could save our friendship." (y/n) mumbled, she'd only known the girl for a short while, though she felt as if it were a lifetime. There were things that (y/n) had told Jolene and not Lily, because she had a different perspective. She'd told her about Clye, and told the truth about her and Remus, they had a lot of history for such a short friendship. Though perhaps things were better this way, perhaps things ought to stay the same, with just (y/n) and Lily.
...
The two girls returned to the common rooms, their study session would begin after they'd dropped off their extra books and other unnecessary items. There was an awful lot of noise coming from the other side of the fat lady, which was a bit concerning given the fact that the two girls had been planning on studying in the common rooms.
The painting swung open, revealing dozens of upperclassmen, each person seemed to be doing something different, there were people stringing up pumpkin lights, others enchanting candles, and in the corner was a record player that had begun to spin out of control. Everyone seemed to be in a costume, it was similar to Halloween parties that (y/n) had seen in muggle movies.
"What in bloody hell is going on here!" (y/n) shouted, all the others turned to face her, some of which were even from other houses.
"It's a halloween party, we're actually in need of records, would you mind helping us out (y/n)?" Elias Jones said, he was a fellow teammate of the girls. Others began surrounding (y/n), they chanted her name and cheered her on, as if she'd already accepted to spin some tunes.
"Sure." (y/n) said, she shrugged her shoulders and sighed, Lily rolled her eyes and smiled at (y/n), who was still surrounded by familiar and unfamiliar faces.
"(y/n), I've got an extra costume for you."
"And after you change you can help me out with this thing."
"Then can you help with the pumpkin lights?"
(y/n) agreed to all and any tall demands from her fellow classmates, she'd forgotten that most of the people in the room knew her from quidditch, still it was a surprise to have so many people calling her by her name. Being a starter meant having at least a little popularity, and of course being friends with the Marauders also added to that.
"I forget that you're popular." Lily teased, though she had her fair share of popularity, being head girl and all.
"Says the head girl." (y/n) chuckled, she focused her attention back to the party, which was unfolding before her very eyes.
"I guess the common rooms are occupied, but i'm sure we'll have plenty of time for runes later on in the week." (y/n) snickered.
"Right, let's enjoy ourselves."
...
(y/n)'s costume consisted of a dress with little fairy wings, it was scrawny and last minute, but it would have to do, she didn't have any other options in terms of a costume. The plus side was the flower crown that came along with it, (y/n) found it adorable.
The first task that the girl had been given was the playlist, she quickly scanned through a crate of albums that had been handed to her, she tossed out the bad ones and made a stack of playable vinyl. She'd also taught several people to change records so that she wouldn't have to do it all night.
There was loud cheering as a group of people entered the common rooms, (y/n) didn't have to look their way to recognize the culprits, it was the Marauders of course. The unruly boys raised crates and bottles above their heads and cheered loudly. (y/n) noticed the alcohol, which was unusual for a Hogwarts party.
There seemed to be a reoccuring theme with the party, muggles, there was muggle music, muggle drinks, muggle food, and muggle costumes. Even Halloween itself was a muggle idea, so perhaps the Gryffindors had planned for this, it was a taste of a different world for most of them.
(y/n) spotted Sirius first, and his strange costume, it was an over simplified greek god costume, he was practically wearing a bed sheet with pins in it.
"You must be a fairy." Sirius teased.
"And you're greek." (y/n) sighed, though boys costume was hardly recognizable.
"We don't necessarily match, sadly, i've got an extra bed sheet if you'd like a change of costume." Sirius smirked, (y/n) just laughed at the boy.
"You're cute, but no, I like my costume." (y/n) stated, Sirius' eyes sparkled at the complement, and they dulled when (y/n) refused his offer, he was going to mutter a great response, but his attention immediately changed when a very stupid fourth year tried changing the record.
"Hey! Don't you dare change that record!" Sirius shouted, the boy jumped up in fear and backed away from the bewitched machine. It is never a smart decision to interrupt the playing of an album, especially when it's The Beatles.
(y/n) just laughed at Sirius, though she couldn't say that she wouldn't do the same, the two shared a passion for the overly popular band. Sirius returned to (y/n), he shook the hair out of his eyes and focused his attention back on the girl.
"It's rude to stare." (y/n) said, she'd noticed how the boy hadn't taken his eyes off of her, it was almost creepy. It made her feel all nervous inside, as if she were melting.
"It's hard not to, when you're just so lovely." Sirius replied, (y/n) thought that he was joking, he sounded as if he were, his tone of voice wasn't very flirty, instead it was childish.
"Thank you, but I don't necessarily feel lovely, this dress it two sizes too small so my stomach sticks out." (y/n) groaned, she could hardly breathe, and she feared that if she knelt down the dress would burst into a thousand pieces.
"I think the stomach is cute." Sirius smirked, he sounded much more earnest this time around, that's why (y/n) couldn't muster a response. He'd managed to make her blush, which was now becoming a common occurrence. (y/n) had always thought that guys like Sirius preferred completely unrealistic body types, but no, once again Sirius had managed to surprise her.
